Since the CWGC site allows one to 'download' all the data - I have decided to build my very own tool that is easy to use to query.. Please give this a try and provide feedback..

http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/

It does not give all the data that CWGC has - eg Additional data of next of kin, or grave location or the documents.. etc For that you still need to go to the CWGC Site and run the query engine..

but its very useful to narrow down search based on names, year of death, unit or cemetery/memorial location. The tool supports multiple "AND" queries to progressively narrow down the search

Couple of enhancements made to the tool.

1. Clicking on http://www.rafcommands.com/database/g.png next to a name will Google Search that name, rank, unit, location etc - hopefully even find you the CWGC page on the CWGC Site.
2. The Date, Unit, Country and Cemetery appear as link. clicking on a link in a record will apply that as a "drill down" query.. to the rest of the results set.
3. Bottom of the page has a section that makes it easy to copy the 'link address' for that query page.

An interesting project.

One question, which stems from a problem that I have when I pull out CWGC information for my History of No 35 Squadron project using the CWGC search facility, are you able to pick up the "trade" field?

Hi Pete,

I had a play with this using Google a few years back.

All very rough and ready and needs a bit of variant cycling to get over the various ways the same info is stored in the CWGC databases

For example A/Gs

Fire up google and put the following into the search box

"Air Gunner" "35 Sqdn" site:http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty

"Air Gnr" "35 Sqdn" site:http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty

etc

same problem for Navigator - filed under Nav, Nav., Navigator, Nav/Bomber, Nav./Bomber

In fact all the fields you want to search on all have variants and include mis scan characters of ?, /, . etc

I thought the only way was to buildup a lexicon for search terms which would cycle through the possible combinations then filter for duplicates.

Thanks Ross

Based on your feedback, as a non techie, I can understand that a reliable search facility on the "trade" field may be quite complicated but I was wondering if it would be practical for Jagan to list the "trade" field content as part of the download record for each airman?

This is a useful field which CWGC does not include in its download for some reason

Pete

Hi Pete, unfortunately they haven't provided the "Trade" in the download file - thus it didnt make it into the data.

The workaround would be to write an automation script that would search the CWGC site against each individual record (of the 124000) and fetch the trade data (so that it can be added to this). Very likely that is against the terms of usage for the CWGC site and they will probably block me!

Jagan

I have contacted CWGC to see if "trade" can be included in its download facility.

UPDATE:

I received the following response from the CWGC today:

"The inclusion of trades within data exports from the CWGC website is due to be implemented when the website is next enhanced. Unfortunately, our web manager cannot give a definite timescale on this but it is hoped to be within the next month or so"

A minor modification to the tool - searching for the tool will also show up a "CWGC" button next to it. eg:

Added several features over the past week.

Start with this link

http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qname=&qnum=&qdate=1940-05&qunit=&qcntry=&qmem=&serialno=&qt=&cur=0

1. Date Search now supports Month (YYYY-MM) in addition to Year and Actual Date
2. Results now show Trade (in Yellow box), Aircraft type and serial (in blue box) and AIR/NA/Forum reference in Red or YEllow box.
3. You can also search by aircraft serial number or by trade (search boxes on top)
4. Clicking on the serial number of an aircraft in this view will take you to the detail page - http://www.rafcommands.com/database/serials/details.php?uniq=L9297 that will show Casualities, AIR references, related posts in the forum that contain that ac's serial.
5. Finally gives a feature to link Henk's / Alex's Unaccounted airmen thread posts to the airmen entries - i did this for 1947 - eg http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qdate=1947

http://www.rafcommands.com/galleries/var/albums/members/cwgcdisp.JPG?m=1542934181

There are a total of 124319 casuality records in this database. About 3292 records (2.65%) have the extra details populated. i.e all entries from 1939-01-01 till 1940-05-31 (just nine months of the war!)

i created a webpage from which entries can be updated. As this is all manual work in linking entries to serials and references, I would definitely appreciate extra help / volunteers for this. send me an email on admin AT rafcommands.com if you are willing to chime in.

this is the webpage. To use it you just use the forum credentials (after i give permissions), to login to a webpage and entries can be made..

Alex , This is little effort to support what you have been doing with Henks database. Hopefully we will have a clear view of who is still left unaccounted for when this work is completed

Dennis, no worries - but whenever you run out of projects, you know where to come! :)

Some random observations :

-I tried to see how fast / or slow this work is - since i have had a lot of practice, it took me less than a day* to process the June 1940 entries. They number 932 records (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qname=&qnum=&qdate=1940-06&qunit=&qcntry=&qmem=&serialno=&qt=&cur=0) . The unaccounted records for June 1940 is 132 (15%) (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qname=&qnum=&qdate=1940-06&qunit=&qcntry=&qmem=&serialno=&qt=UN&cur=0)

-I havent done a day to day check of the unaccounted airmen threads, but one particular day was quite helpful 1940-06-25 (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qname=&qnum=&qdate=1940-06-25&qunit=&qcntry=&qmem=&serialno=&qt=&cur=0) . All the unit names and circumstances came from the forum thread.

-AIR81 records seem to be helpful only when it is Europe or N Africa. Anything beyond (S Africa, Aus, Canada) they are not of use.

-It is sobering when going over the lists of casualties in first months of the war.. lives and aircraft lost on raids that would have contributed little to the outcome in subsequent days.. it gets overwhelming after a while.

*The pace will certainly slow down when the AIR81 records are exhausted. referring to ORBs or other sources is not going to make the process fast. Conservatively - call this a Five year project

Dennis, can you post the link to the index? I think i copied it earlier into this thread http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?15651-Links-to-Unaccounted-Airmen-Sept-1939-till-June-1940

One of the frequent issues is that i find airmen that are not mentioned in the AIR81 nor the Unaccounted threads - i.e. they are unaccounted even in our 'unaccounted threads'.

eg

http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qname=&qnum=&qdate=1940-07-03&qunit=&qcntry=&qmem=&serialno=&qt=&cur=0

has four airmen without units , Henks thread only mentions one of the four - KEYMER.. the other three are still unaccounted for.. there are such cases for almost every day.

Minor milestone - in the bid to make the airmen "accounted for" - we recently crossed "10,000"

There are a total of 122374 casualty records in this database. About 10969 records (8.96%) have some details on circumstances of death.

It took us a month and a half - made easy by the availability of AIR81 files and the great work on the yearly unaccounted threads..

Now if we can do this 12 times over, we will be done with this project ( WINK WINK!)

This is a spectacular database. Thanks very much Jagan.

Not to detract from all your hard work, but I note two errors on my 41 Sqn people, and can certainly add more detail to many. I can also identify which of the '41 Sqdn' entries are actually 41 Sqn SAAF as opposed to RAF. I see the database, but how can I access the page to update the entries for you?

Thanks

Chart 1 - Month wise fatalities totals for the duration of war
Chart 2 - Aircraft type-wise fatality numbers till 1940
Chart 3 - Aircraft type-wise fatality numbers till 1941
Chart 4 - Aircraft typewrite fatality numbers All available..

(Had to truncate the ac name to 8 characters to give an accurate rendering)

I have a question for members. I have added a query by "Region" option. Essentially take all the 98 countries that appear in the CWGC Database and link them to eight regions that I could think of. It makes some querying easy - eg I can retrieve only SEAC related deaths if I need to.. eg: http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qregion=SEAC (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qname=&qnum=&qdate=&qunit=&qappt=&qregion=SEAC&qcntry=&qmem=&srname=&serialno=)

The regions I currently have are :

Africa : 2480 (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qregion=Africa)
Africa - North: 6759 (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qregion=Africa - North)
Americas: 4706 (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qregion=Americas)
Europe: 89462 (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qregion=Europe)
Mediterranean: 6089 (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qregion=Mediterranean)
Middle East: 435 (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qregion=Middle East)
Pacific: 4260 (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qregion=Pacific)
SEAC: 8166 (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qregion=SEAC)

Is this a logical group of regions? I have some questions..

1. Should Africa North and Mediterranean be combined? I currently have only the following in the Mediterranean group

Cyprus , Gibraltar,Greece , Israel and Palestine,Italy ,Lebanese Republic ,Malta ,Turkey

2. Does Middle East deserve a separate region? Should it be rolled into the Mediterranean, or kept as is?

3. Am I missing any other regions that need to be defined on their own?

FWIW .. all the countries represented in the DB are : Albania : 21 | Algeria : 446 | Argentina : 1 | Australia : 2706 | Austria : 132 | Azores : 45 | Bahamas : 53 | Bangladesh : 359 | Belgium : 3203 | Bermuda : 10 | Brazil : 7 | Bulgaria : 24 | Canada : 3882 | Chad : 4 | China, (including Hong Kong) : 79 | Congo (Democratic Republic) : 1 | Croatia : 1 | Cyprus : 81 | Czech Republic : 38 | Denmark : 933 | Djibouti : 8 | Egypt : 5086 | Equatorial Guinea : 10 | Eritrea : 74 | Ethiopia : 24 | Faroe Islands : 14 | Fiji : 11 | France : 8198 | Gambia : 52 | Germany : 16812 | Ghana : 76 | Gibraltar : 134 | Greece : 317 | Guyana : 6 | Hungary : 204 | Iceland : 110 | India : 2069 | Indonesia : 1105 | Iran : 27 | Iraq : 300 | Ireland, Republic of : 158 | Israel and Palestine (including Gaza) : 341 | Italy : 2460 | Jamaica : 7 | Japan : 208 | Kenya : 196 | Lebanese Republic : 43 | Liberia : 10 | Libya : 669 | Luxembourg : 26 | Madagascar : 14 | Malaysia : 319 | Mali : 1 | Malta : 2702 | Mauritania : 5 | Morocco : 38 | Myanmar : 523 | Namibia : 3 | Netherlands : 6145 | New Caledonia : 326 | New Zealand : 488 | Nigeria : 78 | Norway : 428 | Pakistan : 233 | Panama : 1 | Papua New Guinea : 768 | Poland : 379 | Portugal : 33 | Puerto Rico : 1 | Romania : 81 | Russian Federation : 10 | Samoa : 1 | San Marino : 2 | Senegal : 1 | Serbia : 341 | Seychelles : 2 | Sierra Leone : 65 | Singapore : 3127 | Somalia (including Somaliland) : 7 | South Africa : 1262 | Spain : 63 | Sri Lanka : 267 | St. Vincent : 3 | Sudan : 155 | Sweden : 99 | Switzerland : 35 | Syria : 33 | Tanzania : 26 | Thailand : 164 | Trinidad and Tobago : 14 | Tunisia : 422 | Turkey (including Gallipoli) : 11 | Uganda : 4 | United Kingdom : 51988 | United States of America : 378 | Yemen : 75 | Zambia : 11 | Zimbabwe : 444]

70007 records (57.22%) have some details on circumstances of death.

Used a tiny bit of Alex Smart's data from the Coastal Commands thread to get the records in for 210 and 202 Sqdns.. this took it beyond 70K

52350 records (42.78%) to go!

Thanks guys. something else struck me - there appears to be no single site on the internet that provides or attempts to provide photos of all those listed in CWGC.

I figured out that the code and data I have out there can already support photos if they are available.. example

http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/details.php?qnum=33508
http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/details.php?qnum=16510

Obviously - i dont have the bandwidth to start collecting nearly 124000 photos for this.. Does anyone else want to take up this project ? :)

All it requires is for someone to rename a photograph based on the URL number .. and send them to me in batches. and they can be updated almost immediately

I might like to have a go at editing the database, I have found a a few changes.

For example John Washington 1030618 we found died in 1944, not 1942. CWGC are updating their database, will this find its way into your database or does it need to be manually changed?

Hi Dennis,

I will set you up with the access. Will email you the details.

I had found your post earlier on the actual Unaccounted thread and had already updated the entry in the current DB .. http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qnum=1030618

If i find any updates posted on the Unaccounted threads - actual cause of deaths, and corrected dates take first priority in updates. I am behind on unit updates though.

The CWGC Database hosted on this site has now over 100,000 records populated with "Cause of Death".

http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/

This is ofcourse Henk Welting's vision - and ably continued by the forum members listed (http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?25208-The-Unaccounted-Airmen-and-Airwomen-Thread-series-Conclusion&p=145787#post145787) who continue finding details of these Unaccounted airmen and posting them over here. The unaccounted forum has its share of prolific posters for which we should be grateful - the list that i have shared here - http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?25208-The-Unaccounted-Airmen-and-Airwomen-Thread-series-Conclusion&p=145787#post145787

After removing Luftwaffe and Italian records - 122357

100063 records (81.78%) have circumstances of death.

It took me roughly just under an year to work this data into the DB.

I have linked all the Unaccounted Posts with the names except for the year 1942 which I will commence after taking a breather. I reckon atleast another 3000 records will be accounted for once that is finished. There is still a lot of RCAF, RAAF, RNZAF, SAAF data that can easily be sourced and populated. Aus and NZ are being accounted for. Would appreciate if someone can take up RCAF and SAAF data.

And finally :

I acknowledge that the data , even for external websites - quite likely refer to published material on RAF history and losses. Some of these books/authors are acknowledged in our Essential RAF Researchers Book List (http://www.rafcommands.com/the-essential-raf-researchers-library/). These Authors include (But not limited to) Bill Chorley, Colin Cummings, David Gunby, J J Halley,Ross McNeill and Pelham Temple.

Couple of minor enhancements

1.
There is an option to search by "Force" - RAF, RCAF, RAAF etc that was not available earlier.

The results also show an icon showcasing the force that the casuality belongs to.. http://www.rafcommands.com/database/images/iconRAAF.png http://www.rafcommands.com/database/images/iconRNZAF.png http://www.rafcommands.com/database/images/iconRCAF.png http://www.rafcommands.com/database/images/iconRAF.png http://www.rafcommands.com/database/images/iconRIAF.png http://www.rafcommands.com/database/images/iconSAAF.png (yes some of these are post war insignia - but its just makes it easier on the eyes to discern them)

It appears as below

Corporal
Stanley Thomas WOODS (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/details.php?qnum=123326) (33039) http://www.rafcommands.com/database/images/g.png (http://www.google.com/search?q=Corporal+Stanley+Thomas+WOODS+33039+++RAA F)http://www.rafcommands.com/database/cwgc.png (http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2968628/woods,-stanley-thomas/)http://www.rafcommands.com/database/images/iconRAAF.png (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qname=&qcntry=&cur=0&qunit=&qnum=&qmem=&qdate=1943&qforce=RAAF)

2.

The summary of the index page tells how many records are accounted for and how many are aircraft related and non-aircraft related

eg: 101566 records (83.01%) have some details on circumstances of death. 94075 are related to aircraft incidents and 7493 are non-aviation deaths..

I do think that of the remaining 20,000 odd records, a majority of them would be non-aviation related as those are the ones most likely to be not accounted for...

Among other news - the number of unaccounted has dipped below 15000 ...

107374 records (87.75%) have circumstances of death.
..14983 records (12.25%) do not have details.

Next Milestone 12236 to get us below the 10% mark (2747 records away)And getting us below 10000 after that..

I wonder how many years that will take!

Your current query terms returns 122357 records,
109000 records (89.08%) have circumstances of death.
13357 records (10.92%) do not have details.

Within spitting distance of 110,000 and 90% (1125 records away)

Your current query terms returns 122357 records,
110130 records (90.01%) have circumstances of death.
12227 records (9.99%) do not have details.

And finally - the number of unaccounted airmen dips below 10%..
Next milestone - get the unaccounted to drop below 10,000 .. into 9999! thats 2228 records away

And probably at that point we will hit a wall.. where we can make absolutely no progress. but that point is still some distance away.. there are far more entries that i know can be traced down .. we haven't even got to the 1944,45 threads yet.

Apologies for the amateur question, but how can I report/amend an error in the database?

The crew of Wellington Mk IV Z1218 are erroneously listed under "Z6298?" : http://www.rafcommands.com/database/serials/details.php?uniq=Z6298?

Elsewhere the database has an entry for Z1218 with the correct AIR81 file merged in: http://www.rafcommands.com/database/serials/details.php?uniq=Z1218

The 2nd link also has the incorrect date of crash by 1 day, the aircraft crashed on 20/10/1941 rather than the 21/10/1941.

Apologies if I've missed an obvious button or function to suggest corrections

9,997 records are unaccounted (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qt=UN)..

(Thats 8.17%)

Okay, there was a little bit of cheating involved, about 200-225 records from Singapore /SEAC around Feb 15,16,17 have been added as "Probably Killed during the Battle and Surrender of Singapore"...

This was the status
100063 records (81.78%) have circumstances of death.
22294 records (18.22%) do not have details.

Two years into this project, we are at
114,580 records (93.59%) are "Accounted for".
7,854 are still unaccounted. (6.41%)

So the past year, we made updates to 14,440 entries, bringing us much closer to the end.

A shout out to member Jon Hayworth, who helped us knock out nearly 3000 of this year's updates.

We have almost reached a point where it is like squeezing blood out of water. There are still 4000 unaccounted airmen from England, perhaps someone hit the lottery and pays for the death certificates, we can get this pretty close to 98% done? :-)

This week I implemented a (hidden) search feature in our CWGC DB.. thought I would socialize it here

This will allow you to simply take the CWGC UID number and query my site..

Eg: the CWGC Site, you take the bold/italics part
https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/1536592/NORMAN%20STERLING%20EWART/ (https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/1536592/NORMAN%20STERLING%20EWART/)

And append it to the RAF Commands URL
http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/details.php?qnum= (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/details.php?qnum=1536592)1536592 (http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/details.php?qnum=1536592)

Ofcourse going from the RAFCommands page to CWGC is always easier - just click the http://www.rafcommands.com/database/images/cwgc.png Icon..

I had to call out one milestone that we crossed today.

The current number of Accounted Airmen in our CWGC based DB has crossed 95% Completion!

In October 2020 we were at:

114,580 records (93.59%) are "Accounted for". 7,854 are still unaccounted. (6.41%)

Since then, it has been like pulling teeth, but pretty much it was Jon Heyworth who has been carrying out slog on a daily basis. Having dug up excess of 1600 (if not 1700) entries to help us cross the 95% Accounted Milestone

And on the side many other entries have been improved 'qualitatively' .. thats another story.. Great work Jon!

Now only 6100 airmen left!

The next question is, what do people think should happen with the British airmen for whom I KNOW there are no records of cause of death other than obtaining a GRO Death certificate. The majority of these are 1945 to 1947 but there is a spread across all years. Should these be left blank ? Should there be an entry of The style of : " died post discharge of service related causes and no details are available unless a GRO Death certificate is purchased " ?

if you add any entry in that style currently, they are "poorly accounted and lost in the system " ( These ones give me the biggest headache where I'll go through a block, finish it, then find an extra half a dozen men have no real cause of death) For example Iraq since April had dropped from 60 unaccounted to 37 unaccounted RAF Airmen , but Heasman, Marsh and Mitchell still have no real cause of death

Thats only 3 but I suspect there's 10 -15 percent like that in say the U.K. Taking one town as an example, Cardiff . There are 135 burials of all nationalities of Airmen and Women, there are only 4 unaccounted :

Williams, October 1945 , Grainger, February 1946 , Webber, June 1946 and Symons, April 1947. These all died post discharge and there is no records of how other than by DC. In the "poorly or partially accounted category

then for example, you have Percy who died in January 1947 Griffiths who died in November 1946 both of whom have no entry other than possibly dying in hospital. They died post discharge too and their actual cause of death is also currently also unobtainable

so if that's done you almost need a 3rd category In a search facility : Accounted, unaccounted and unaccountable without the DC, the latter two categories still coming up in a search facility for them

I like “ Should there be an entry of The style of : " died post discharge of service related causes and no details are available unless a GRO Death certificate is purchased " as it may encourage people to purchase said dearth certificate

Thanks Paul, do you think ( If it can be done, as I'm no Jagan like whizz kid ) that it should still be traceable and not classed as " accounted "

From a technical perspective, we can do anything . Show it as "Unaccounted" , or "Poorly Accounted" etc we can figure that out. Today we show the accounted in a green box, and the unaccounted in a red tinged box.. we can show it in any other colour. I like the idea of 'Partially Accounted For' and maybe show it in 'Yellow' tint?

What i would love to do is to give option for visitors to 'Claim' an unaccounted record and they would go and get the GRO Death Certificate an report it back. then we can update it . (This would prevent multiple people from trying to buy the same DC). Call it "Sponsor a DC" scheme..

There are 3013 Unaccounted from UK for all years - and 1250 of these are from the years 1945,46,47.. Are these more likely to yield a cause of death in the DC?

Hi Jagan ,

I probably have at least 500 from various years that I know there’s no record of other than a DC . Mainly 45/46/47. The question is going to crop up at some point when all other avenues are exhausted . One possibility I’ve not explored yet is local hospital records to see if they can fill in some of these blanks , but if they do, I can’t pretend to visit every country archive in the UK , it would need people doing it locally and. even then wouldn’t pick up those who died at home of war related causes after being discharged from the RAF.

It may be useful though , for example : someone’s local cemetery they are interested in, may have just one or two airmen unaccounted and if it’s known there’s no other way than a DC, then maybe people would decide to get and share

Looking at John Thomas GAZE 1414309

We have the following

http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/details.php?qnum=16289

Invalided out of the RAF, he died in Pontypridd hospital following a long illness - Now we know he died in Hospital and of an unknown illness - It would be great to know exactly what illness - but equally it i good to know general circumstances ILLNESS - i.e. not RTA, not other Accident, not plane crash, nor suicide, homicide nor KIA etc etc - his death is not entirely unknown, but exact cause ir not known. If you went down any filtering - I would suggest targeting the unknowns unknowns rather than the known unknowns first..

I agree that the quality of the current entries needs improvement/fixing.

quick dirty queries

records with "hospital" in the field (And not tied to aircraft serial) - 3209
natural causes - 337
illness -471
discharge (post discharge death) - 381

I personally have the following to fix.

Aircraft related entries that do not specify the aircraft name/type (i.e wrong serial, unknown serial) - 685
Non aircraft related entries that do not have "Detail" - but are linked to an external site or post - 3745

I can probably help with missing aircraft serials to casualties at some point . If you can send me a copy of the people in the RAF with only “ natural causes “ it would be super helpful to have by my elbow
