WALI, Muhammad Swan - P/O - 2140 - RIAF.
Delhi/Karachi 1939-1945 War Memorials, India.

Okay among other work done today, i discovered that CWGC has an error in his date of death

He died in the crash of Audax K5594 four years earlier on 1943-01-16.

How do we get it corrected? I am sure this can be verified via the Form 1180. I have the ORB Page that depicts the crash and incident.

PS: Reached out to them on their FB page.

Hi Jagan

I have established a contact with the relevant department having recently been through the WW1 service records of airman dying from 1918 to 1920. I simply sent her an e-mail with jpg images of the records attached. This was accepted as adequate proof for an amendment to be made.

If you can sent me scans of the docs I can pass them on for you.

Is it possible that the Polish "missing" names are recorded on the Polish War Memorial (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_War_Memorial), and not on the Runnymede Memorial? Therefore they are not part of the CWGC's remit? Odd that the Polish graves are recorded on the CWGC website, but not the Polish missing.

There's pdf of the names recorded on the Polish War Memorial available to download here which seems to have some (all?) of your missing names:

Simon,

Thanks - the missing names vs graves dfferentiation makes sense - I could not find any polish names on Runnymede so thats that.

Still i cant understand why the CWGC is not the caretaker for the Polish War Memorial.. and have that data in their DB..

Various documents on ancestry.com databases state Britland's date of death as the 21st Sep 1941 so I'll forward them to CWGC for review.

His remains were actually cremated on site on mountain top due to the inaccessibility of the site! Presumably the other crew members too.

One more wrong date

https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2116235/haines,-roy-s./

Lieutenant Roy S. HAINES (103343) Pilot Maryland NA/PRO 1941-11-17 21 Sqdn SAAF Egypt Halfaya Sollum War Cemetery

The date should be 1941-11-20

The ORB of 21 Sqn SAAF confirms the loss of four Marylands to Bf-109s on 1941-11-20 and mentions Haines by name. Several others were lost on this date - http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/index.php?qname=&qcntry=&cur=0&qunit=21%20Sqdn%20SAAF&qnum=&qmem=&qdate=1941-11-20&serialno=&srname=&qt=&qord=

The GRO form states the date as the 17th which is probably where the error came up from.

Just to add my two penn'orth. I've contacted the CWGC on several occasions over the last few years to either offer amendments or additions to entries.

I've always found them very appreciative and co-operative, if sometimes a little slow to respond (which is understandable).

The latest suggested amendment I sent, with corroborating documents, was this entry, who was previously recorded as "Davison C G" and has now been corrected:

https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/4028532/davison,-charles-stockdale/

This took nine days from my initial e-mail, which is pretty impressive, IMHO. And I got a feedback form to fill in too!

I think we have another case here:

But as the squadron ORB does not stated his service number I am afraid the CWGC would not accept it as a proof. Anyone else can check this case please if it should be corrected or not?

an interesting case that i just found

Pilot Officer Richard Carnbys WALES (87420) commemorated on the Runnymede memorial for 1941-05-22

If you read into the A705, the two RAAF men were taken prisoner and were murdered 'sometime' in November 1944.

I have to rush for lunch now, but I think the logic is that they presumed death occurred around 25 Jan 1945 before the end of the war and it was only during post war investigation that they found the Nov 1944 information and then didn't inform family, i think that's what it implies. See notes in the index sheets.

Death was presumed on 'or before' 25th Jan 1945,

if you see pages 22/23 of 110 of Moody's report.

And page 8.

There's a reason for the 25th Jan 1945 date in this case, it would be clearer if the phrase 'on or before' was used perhaps .

Not pretty reading.

I have more such corrections, but to be sure I am looking for at least 2 source documents. So I'll put them on the forum soon.

There's an entry on one of the 'Unaccounted Airmen' threads here where the name on the Runnymede Memorial doesn't match the card in the Air 78 series:

http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?24985-471118-Unaccounted-Airmen-18-11-1947&p=144697#post144697

As I posted on the thread, I wonder how likely it is that the Air 78 card could be wrong?

Thanks for the post Paul

There are four births for a Thomas John Thompson in Northern Ireland about the 1905-1906 period. Two in Belfast, one in Enniskillen and one in Lurgan.

The burial register just has his name, date of burial plus a reference number 52203 (a grave number?).

There are also four other Thompsons on the same page of the register in Kensal Green, buried or cremated a few next months either side. Perhaps relatives, perhaps not - it's not exactly an uncommon name.

His service number seems to indicate that he enlisted at Cardington in 1941. He would have been about 36 - maybe too old, unless he was re-enlisting?

The CWGC site gives:- 9400071 AC2 Ernest James Bray, RAFVR, died 25 May 1940.
UK TNA AIR 78/20/6 Image 22 Bottom Right gives his s/n as 940071. This is in the Block 935000-964999 RAFVR Issued at Cardington from 1 Sep 1939 to 31 Mar 1940(?). Much more likely?

Sadly, my last few attempts to get records corrected have resulted in pre-formatted letters from faceless bureaucrats who seem to have no interest in getting the records right. Even when evidence has been sent in, the records remain unchanged. I e-mailed one person saying that a simple look up online would show that 35 Squadron were not in Egypt at the time and therefore the record could not be correct .... to be advised that CWGC has no access to online facilities!

I am sure there are people who care, but they have certainly not been involved in my last few correction attempts .... I now just e-mail them with my findings, knowing that I have done my best to help them get their records straight .... it is disappointing .... but seems to be the "UK norm" at the moment

Folks,
Can I suggest that when posting theses finds, can you advise if you have submitted them to CWGC or not, i tried on Friday night to start at the start of this thread to see whats been changed, and I didn't get far. If you have gone to the effort of find the error and identifying sources etc, save them down and submit them to CWGC. I use the email address enquiries /at/ cwgc.org

The missing serial numbers are like most errors simple scanning errors and one needs look no further than the scanned Grave registration forms on the CWGC entries itself, I looked at Hildage and Littleboy as examples.

Wenaus, likely also is a scanning error, if you look at the scanned files on his database entry, Wenaus is on the older document, whereas the other document looks like a more modern word processer print out.

Or we could do a large submittal at the end (if there is one).

Pse note that I have, today, been notified by CWGC that they have accepted all the Service Number corrections that I recently submitted. All were typo/OCR/database errors so no subsequent stonemasonry is required.
And on the same tack, as a result of experimental manipulation on Excel of big chunks of the CWGC database, I found the same s/n allocated to two different Czech casualties. I made Pavel aware of this. He, in turn, submitted a correction to CWGC. This afternoon he tells me it has also been accepted.
It would seem, therefore, that provided everybody is singing from the same hymn-sheet, and uses this Stickie to inform all and sundry of what they have found and/or done there seems little point in appointing a formal Officer i/c CWGC Corrections.
However, if one is to be appointed then I cannot think of a finer candidate than Dennis. His dexterity with a sharp stick into somnolent cages is well known!!

Hi all, I like the idea of monthly submission sent to the CWGC as Dennis has suggested.
But on the other hand I do not know how they would look at such a list, maybe individual requests have better chance to be successful?
Other point is the proves for the change. In the recent case Peter has spotted incorrect service number and I was able to find an original WWII document I have photographed in Military Archive in Prague which proved the number in CWGC DB is not correct. And I can see there might be a problem with putting such materials together from different sources for the monthly submission.

So from my point of view it is also better to make an individual submission when possible.

This apparent name correction from a few months back, I looked at his service record and the man referred to himself in most cases, even in his own written signature as George Noble Bryan Sparks, despite having been registered as Bryan Noble George Sparks at birth in 1913 in Ware, England.

Thats the kind of correction I wouldn't persue as his file contains mostly G N B rather that B N G, and perhaps the man preferred to be called thusly.

Well, having defended the organisation above I have now decided I'll have no part in assisting them hence forth, beyond this forum.

Mr Skelly (Since we are being formal) this morning sent me six cut and paste emails generically dismissing emails that were sent, i'm particularly annoyed with this as it took considerable time over two nights to prepare them even though they were started here. Indeed I have to question whether he actually read the information that was sent to him, in one case in particular I don't believe so.

As I mentioned previously, there is a certain individual (and there may be others) who appears to have no interest in getting the records correct, which is why I have adopted the approach of informing them and leaving it at that ..... it is a shame, as it tarnishes the excellent work that is carried out by the organisation in preserving the memory of the war dead.

Interestingly, Mr S was the individual who responded (in the broadest terms!) to my enquiries

Just sent this let see what i get

P/O ROY FRANK CAROL Royal Canadian Air Force Died 06/06/1944

who was killed in Halifax BIII LW382 on this date

https://426sqdn.ca/remembrances/honour_roll_iii.html

He is listed as R253018 Sgt R.F. Carol here

However, on CWGC I note that his rank is Pilot Officer (Air Gunner) Service Number R/253018

But your own supporting information Grave Registration Report has J.90183

https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2762127/carol,-roy-frank/#&gid=null&pid=1

While an earlier log repeats R/253018

It is common knowledge that for the wartime RCAF all NCO has service number starting with R and
officers J

Esteemed expert on the RCAF Historian Hugh Halliday provides an explanation here

http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?6411-RCAF-Service-Numbers

But the Important bit is

The RCAF Special Reserve was created by Order-in-Council on 14 September 1939.
Soon afterwards, "other ranks" were enlisted with an "R" number, which they kept unless commissioned.
Thus, J.E. Abbey enlisted 20 January 1941 with number R82627).

Aircrew enlistments from early 1940 onwards had to wait until they had been trained to "wings" standard
before being either promoted Sergeant or commissioned. If commissioned, they received a "J" number (remember,
flight engineers excepted), regardless of whether the commissioning was immediate or later in their
career. To go back to J.E. Abbey, enlisted January 1941 as R.82627 - upon being commissioned he received a
new number - J.86037.

So let’s look at ROY FRANK CAROL in particular

A source no less official than the Canadian Government (the Canada Gazette) confirms this information

This must surely by any means be "relevant documentary evidence" and I am sure you agree?

1867-1946 (Dominion of Canada), volume 79, number 5, 3 February 1945, page 21

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/canada-gazette/001060-110.01-e.php?PHPSESSID=jnhu65f0a9pvffo0smn85dj6akeftk80aq 9lgu3tv7ptt4qap7l1&q1=J90183&q3=&interval=20

The undermentioned airmen to be Pilot Officers and are allotted personal numbers as shown after their names:

0 CAN R253018 Sgt Roy Frank Carol, (Fatal) CAN (J90183 ) 5 June/44

This reveals he was commissioned on 5th June 1944 (the date before his death) so technically on 6th June 1944 he as
P/O ROY FRANK CAROL J90183. It even notes ‘Fatal’ i.e. the Canada Govt alread knew he had died at this point

However, he could equally be listed as Sgt (Air Gunner) Service Number R/253018

But what he can’t really be listed is “half and half” as he is at the moment?
, i,e Officers rank, NCO Service number ???

As his headstone says P/O I suggest his service number should be J90183 and as his Grave Registration Reports says P/O J90183 perhaps this should be used?

Kind Regards

I've collected the toys I ejected from my pram this morning. Still annoyed however.

I sent on pages from Carol's service file, but I felt that their own records ought to have been enough, thanks for the extra information you sent them Paul.

i also sent on some instructions for them to use the ORB viewer.

I suppose most recently i printed PDF pages from the viewer and sent them, but I did point them at the correct pages etc.

Hi,

As the result of my request to CWGC, the date of death for the crew of Lancaster W4105 has been corrected to 25/08/1942. It was preciously recorded as 24/08/1942 as this was the date the aircraft took off from Waddington.

This concerns the following airmen :
McDonald J/9524
Page 744324
Holland 1006787
Hagger 820001
Nicholson 80278
Beaumont J/9205
Rickard 133213

The plane crashed at 01h10 am on 25/08/1942.

Success!

What a coincidence!!!!

I think maybe the way forward on this is one at a time and as much evidence as you can provide!

Dear Mr McMillan,

Thank you for your email below and I must say this is quite a coincidence.

2 days ago, I dealt with another enquiry from another member of the public who highlighted exactly the same error explained in your email.

The relevant documentary evidence was supplied and I subsequently amended our internal database.

You will now be able to see by using the link below that the correct J/ number appears on our entry for P/O Carol.

Dear Mr XXXXX

Thanks for correcting the information

The reason I think maybe his name was submitted twice was that his name came up on a internet forum so maybe more than 1 person was interested enough to investigate him and see the inconsistency on your records.

Many thanks

Pilot Officer ROY FRANK CAROL R/253018 1944-06-06 7147 https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2762127
Pilot Officer ALLAN MARTIN FOSTEY R/147033 1945-02-09 15326 https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1270287

And in the same vein, RCAF NCOs with "J" Numbers

Flight Sergeant JOSEPH PHILIP YOUNG J/89253 1944-05-23 50829 https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1532278

I can download evidence pages for these RCAF men from their service records and I'll pop them in a drop box link. But it'll likely be a few nights before I'm online.

Most of those buried actually have the correct service number on their own scanned graves reg form. McLeod is odd in that someones 'corrected' his s/n to the NCO one on the Grave Reg form!

Just sent the following to the CWGC:

Whilst carrying out some research, I noted that your records for Basil Vernon Robinson (https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2760833/robinson,-basil-vernon/), show him as being on strength of No 35 Squadron at the time of his death.

Squadron, Group and Airfield records show that, whilst he was flying in a No 35 Squadron aircraft at the time of his death, he was travelling as a passenger in his capacity as Station Commander, RAF Graveley (having been posted out of No 35 Squadron to that position in May 1943).

1530067 BONE TOM T 21 06/10/1946 Leading Aircraftman Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Sqdn. United Kingdom RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL Panel 286. Son of William Henry and Annie Mary Bone, of St. Helens, Lancashire.
This has no Service Number. It should be 3011976.
The Marriage of his parents (above) William Henry Bone to Annie Mary Brown is Reg at Q3 1921 Longtown 10b 1020
There is a FREEBMD transcription of a Birth registration:-
b. Q4 1924 Tom Bone (MMS Brown) Reg Longtown(Cumberland) 10b 930 (FREEBMD records the forename as just ‘Tom’, and the parents seem to be as per the entry 1530067 (above)).
He was, clearly, an ATC Cadet. He Enlisted 3011976 RAFVR in Block 3010000-3014917 Cadets ATC Padgate 1-May-43 onwards. (See TNA AIR 78/18/3 Image99 Left Bottom, which gives his sole forename as just ‘Tom’).
d. 6 Oct 1946 as pax in York MW125 of 511 Sqn as ‘Tom Bone’ (RAFWEB).

508631 Sgt John Joseph Kavanagh DFM: DOAS 18 October 1941

The CWGC entry for Sgt Kavanagh DFM records him in the printed register and the online db as of 241 Squadron.

At that time that Squadron was based variously in the United Kingdom, operating Lysanders and Tomahawks.
In Nov 1942 they were sent to North Africa, having re-equipped solely with Mustangs from March.

Sgt Kavanagh DFM, a decorated WOp/AG of considerable experience, served with Middle East bomber squadrons from early 1938.
By April 1940, Kavanagh was serving with 211 Squadron, in the Desert, then Greece, then Palestine and finally in the Sudan from June 1941.
The scant 211 Squadron record of June 1941, together with the photographs and recall of 211 Squadron aircrew (acting as Blenheim Operations Course instructors) and an RAAF trainee, show that he was in fact with the Squadron at Wadi Gazouza as an aircrew instructor up until his death that October.

My fuller accounts about 508631 Sgt John Joseph Kavanagh DFM:
http://www.211squadron.org/jj_kavanagh_dfm.html
and
http://www.211squadron.org/w_baird.html#WadiGazouza

A 1941 transfer back to a UK Squadron to a unit with Lysander WOp/AG aircrew is not impossible, however, in Kavanagh's case his continued service with 211 Squadron is clear (in my opinion).
A scanning error in CWGC register & db creation seems likely: his unit is not recorded on his headstone.
As the CWGC provides for amendments with fairly strict requirements for documentation, I am rather doubtful that the various copies I now hold (from contributors now themselves dead) are of sufficient weight, however, I shall at some point put in a request for amendment.

Sgt Alan Doughty Shuckburgh of 603 Squadron RAF had a twin brother P/O John Shirley Shuckburgh of 54 Squadron RAF. There appears to be an anomaly regarding these pilot brothers is that this RAF commands CWGC website shows Alan Doughty Shuckburgh as service number 904834. However, 904834 John Shirley Shuckburgh was promoted pilot office on probation on 15th January 1941, gazetted 24 March the 1941 and subsequently the London Gazette 2nd May 1941 shows Sgt J S Shuckburgh as 904834 promoted pilot office on probation (62251) to correct a misspelt surname. Again an error because future gazette enties show his service number as 62241. Is their an error on CWGC records or were there errors in gazetting John Shirley Shuckburgh?

Wrong date for

http://www.rafcommands.com/database/wardead/details.php?qnum=39430Sergeant Clifford John ROWLANDS (1624754)

CWGC https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2437057/rowlands,-clifford-john/ has him as Died 05 September 1944

Their own document shows it as 25 9 44

Brimble there is a peculiar case. The Brookwood burial is related to remains discovered in 1980 by people excavating a wreck no 14 Sep 1980, whereas the Sittingbourne burial has an Unknown burial given a name at a later date.

Brookwood burial is dated 16 Oct 1980 but a concentration report there has a 17 Oct 1918 exhumation report mentioned.
Both burials records refer to one another.

Jagan, just wondering are you submitting these to CWGC nowadays, I have terribly slacked off due to a WW1 project I've been trying to finish this year.

Hello,

As recorded on CWGC (not in all docs, others do show 123610):

133610 F/Lt (Nav.) Owain Glyndwr RICHARDS RAFVR + 15 February, 1945 - Buried Kiel War Cemetery.

Service number should read 123610, not 133610. Therefore, Casualty Database incorrect, as well.

LEADING AIRCRAFTMAN S J DESAI Service Number: IND/25908
Regiment & Unit/Ship
Royal Indian Air Force

Date of Death Died 24 February 1946 (To be corrected to 24 March 1946)

Buried or commemorated at
HONG KONG (HAPPY VALLEY) PARSEE CEMETERY Grave 115. China, (including Hong Kong)

https://archive.cloud.cwgc.org/archive/doc/doc5734441.JPG This is the honour roll - it has the month struck off by pen and changed to February from March
https://archive.cloud.cwgc.org/archive/doc/doc3455989.JPG Grave Registration form has 24 March 1946

Here is the other reason to believe the date is March.

Finding an RIAF airman buried so far away in Hong Kong is an anamoly. The one connection I can make is that No.4 Squadron RIAF went to Japan as part of the BCOF. True enough, the ORB of 4 Sqdn (AIR27/61/9) has the following:

5.2.46 1000Hrs On 5th March 1946 the advance party (3 officers, 1 WO, 2 Sgts, 9 Cpls, 50 ACs and 10 EFs) embarked on ship M V DUNERA
15.3.46 MV DUNERA steamed into Singapore
22.3.46 MV DUNERA touched Hongkong. Another march past was arranged. One Officer and Sixty men represented the RIAF
30.3.46 MV DUNERA reached Kure

It seems highly likely that LAC S J Desai was part of the detachment of 4 Sqdn and died of unknown causes while the ship was in Hongkong. As per his religion, he was buried in the local Parsi cemetery - thus the lone grave in that cemetery

EDIT: TWGPP has a photo of the headstone https://www.twgpp.org/photograph/view/3549641 that appears to show his full name. I have ordered the photo and made the donation.

ADDED LATER.

The Photo sent by TWGPP has the full name of the airman LAC Soli Jehangir Framji DESAI RIAF but the date it has on the tombstone is 24th February 1946. The headstone is not the CWGC Style but a private headstone probably erected by the local parsi community.

Hi Paul,

Drop a line to the CWGC they will review it and then correct it. I had an Aussie KIA in WW1 that with a relative’s approval had an inscription put on his headstone, the CWGC didn’t change it on their website so I got them to add it on which they did.

Cheers,

John.
