Hi Jagan,

Quite a few of that last batch don't seem to have been marked as accounted ? Their entries seem corrupted ? They have my additions and still have the " one of the 4.45 percent unaccounted" entry wording : for example :

MAIOCCHI
Brown 3570
Crowther / Goodfellow/ Harper / Doherty/ McGrath / Moore / off the Alamein Memorial
Newman 1038773
All the early ones in the Azores

But they are many more. I'm sure I entered them correctly, certainly as I have before ? I added 200 new and corrected entries in the last lot, plus what Mark added and the total accounted has only dropped by 46

There's another funny corruption too Jagan, look at the very first entry for 1939 , it now mentions Lancaster W4103

jonheyworth
22nd November 2021, 10:31
It's throughout that last batch Jagan, if you look 7 of the poorly accounted I updated in Canada are now wholly unaccounted.

To avoid any potential corruption issues , I've stated a fresh thread

Fixed the corruption and the last set of updates. you are right missing putting the forum post links and hence they ended up not being counted for..

MAIOCCHI was not updated as I am not updating GAF and Italian POW deaths just yet ..

Edward John Denton 1234108 , a pilot , was reported missing, presumed dead in Spitfire MB 784 which left Maison Blanche for GAFSA at 15:00 Hours on 1 July

Thank you, most interesting, so does this suggest that Spitfire PRXI MB784 crashed somewhere on a flightpath between Algiers (Maison Blanche) and Central Tunisia i.e overland ?

This is the source of this information

http://www.rafcommands.com/archive/15648.php

"book "No 43 'Fighting Cocks' Squadron":

'On the 6th (June 1944) CO Laing-Meason relinquished his period of command and returned to a posting in the UK - sadly, he was killed not long after in a flying accident in a Tiger Moth at Box Hill in Surrey.' - [DATE 28th October 1944]

The same information is in book "43 Squadron".

I had only one recovered some years ago in argentina, at the moment in Argentina exist only one in the days of school at Buenos Aires, Laing Meason is a Cattle rancher and his brother Gilbert killed in a flying accident with Tiger Moth!."

His Brother Gilbert LAING-MEASON. Leading Aircraftman 1267845, Pilot under training. Royal Air Force (VR) died 26th July 1941 aged 23. Son of Gilbert Laing-Meason and of Thelma Laing-Meason (nee McKean), of Guanaco, F.C.O., Argentina. His brother, Sqdn. Ldr. Patrick Beverley Laing-Meason, D.F.C., also died on service on the 28th October 1944. At rest in London Road Cemetery, Chippenham, Wiltshire.

I have seen both a "Tiger Moth" and Miles aircraft quoted for this so I wonder if the story has been confused ?

Gilbert LAING-MEASON (1267845) U/T Pilot Master I N7992 AIR81/7882

Master I - N7992 - 9 FTS - crashed on take-off at night Babdown Farm.

It's not right Paul, he's proving VERY difficult to track down, I know where he died and basically how he died, but need more as I don't like " presumably and probably " and has this has already happened to him once , and I don't want to add another such long term supposition before another correction.

It's not been easy to trace anything else on him.. All I know it wasn't a Tiger Moth on Box Hill with a subsequent hospital death . It MAY possibly be a Tiger Moth but certainly not there ? Does anyone have details of any aircraft accidents near Northolt on 28 October 1944 ? I posed the question elsewhere this forum but not elsewhere ?

I don't think T2060 is the correct serial for Cheyne. As can be seen at:
http://www.rafcommands.com/database/serials/details.php?uniq=T2060
two different losses are associated with this serial. I think the 101 Sqn loss on 27 Aug 40 is the correct one.
Does anyone have any ideas about this 14 Sqn loss?

I thought it would be best to move deaths not related to enemy action to this thread.

1246954 Aircraftman 2nd Class Cyril Maynard

According to the burial record, AC2 Maynard died on December 13, 1942, at the Lenham Sanatorium in Kent, in all likelihood from a form of tuberculosis.

markpeelgb
7th December 2021, 09:55
A correction this time.

576378 Aircraftman 1st Class Raymond George ANDERSON

AC1 Anderson is currently listed among airmen killed in air raids. Based on various newspaper reports--including the Chelmsford Chronicle of September 5, 1941--he in fact died in Ongar Hospital on 27 August 1941 as a result of injuries accidentally caused during a 'mock duel' with another airman, his best friend. Given the location of the hospital, he was probably based at North Weald.

F/O Rupert Tom Guy ARTHUR (66048) 1942-03-05

Just looked him up on WAR DEATHS and his unit is TONGAL

His engagement was announced in Singapore newspapers in 1939 (before he joined the RAF - assume local enlistment in RAFVR) and I assume he was based their (both he and his Fiancťe were from UK) - I wonder if it should actually be TENGAH in Singapore ? BTW Jon where did you get the information about him going missing from - he is buried in Java (JAKARTA WAR CEMETERY) - so an identifiable body was found

LAC Chambers' death on 7 April 1942 from natural causes was the result of frontal sinusitis and a consequent cerebral abscess.

That's a REALLY good one to find. Fair play . His COD is not recorded in the ORB, nor in his actual RAF records

An excellent point. And many more might have been saved by a greater availability of antibacterial treatments for post-operative infections like peritonitis, as well as pneumonia. One of the many interesting things about this project is what it reveals about the huge toll taken by disease in the 'citizen armies' of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Lots of young men (and some young women) in close quarters, mixing their bacteria and viruses, some weakened by childhood maladies, and some condemned by the vigour of their youthful immune systems. No wonder scientists learned so much about infection and treatment by studying armies!

34225 Sergeant Davis JONES

A somewhat puzzling case, perhaps due to the fact that this is a very common name. According to the probate record, Sergeant Jones died at the Stanley Hospital in Liverpool on 29 April 1941. A story in the Liverpool Echo reports that an inquest into the death of David Jones, aged 55, a joiner from Walker Street, Blackley, Manchester, found that he received fatal injuries in a crane accident at the Liverpool docks. This is the right age and address, as well as date. A funeral notice in the Manchester Evening News provides the same information.

It is possible that Sergeant Jones was working in the docks in a service capacity, or perhaps he had already left the forces but was reported as a service death anyway. Others on this forum might have a better idea of the explanation, but it does appear to be him.

He was in a MU, I'll see if I can double check in the week

Apologies: I should have replied with the quote. 971659 Corporal George William Simpson. There are two George W Simpsons in the index to the death records, one in Hull and one in Scarborough, but neither seemed right. He is buried in Ripon, but checks against the 1939 Register suggested that the George Simpson buried in Ripon was not the George Simpson who died in Scarborough or Hull. With Jon H's help, it became clear that this is one of those cases in which the death record does not contain a first name or the first name is inaccurate.
