Hi Ladies and Gents,
Go to the old board
http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi
Select the forum eg General
Click on archive on top right of table.
Click page 446 etc on top right
Select the required thread
Or use the old board search function but click the "search archives box" and limit the period to 1 year.

Ross,

Keep an eye on the vbulletin import system, they are listing Dc forums as a possible addition to impex, if that happens then you can convert the posts from the old board to here.

Hi Lee,

I'm advised by the support department that it is for DCForum+ not the early DCForum 6x series.

So no joy at the moment.

I tried to search the archive on the old board but a get a message from 'Easyspace' with a pretty red elephant and the message

Error 500 - configuration error.

What am I doing wrong or do not have?

Thanks

As I you do not say what your search terms were or the limits you put on it I'm firing blind here.

Try this.

Go to the old board.

Click the search icon

Put the following into the keyword(s) box

142 Sqn

leave all the defaults but these two

Search how many days into the past
change this from Search All to Last 1 Year on the pull down menu

Also search the archived threads
Tick this box

Then hit Search Now after a few moments a large list of threads will appear.

I've tried this and it works both at my work and at home. If nothing appears then it is how your browser acts rather than the board search software.

Hello Ross,

I don't seem to be able to access the Archived Main Category postings on the old board. Is there a problem?

Many thanks,

Hello Ross,

I was noting today that google site searches don't seem to be finding old messages on the old forum.

I was searching for some names I'm certain are on a thread about escape evaders etc, for example the service mens names on the airliner G-AGES don't return from an
xxxx site:rafcommands.com search

I wondered, I in the last week or so 'submitted' my own site to google to get their web spiders to run through it. Might this be an option for you? It requires a free account subscription. Pop the DC Forum link into google and see if their spiders might run through it.

If you had a link to the old forum, from the RAF Commands home page also it might help the spiders see it and keep it cached.

Now, I can't be certain that my own site is now wonderfully indexed but I'm hoping it helps.

There is such a wealth of knowledge on the old forum that its a pity to not be able to acess it this way.

Any ideas?

Peter,

please note that that old archive has not been active for over 13 months hence the inbuilt search engine simply will not work anyway I think.

Use the google insite search facility:

porteous site:rafcommands.com

That will search both the new and old forums for you. There are 36 returns for that.

Hi Dennis
Shouldn't that actually be... "porteous site:rafcommands.com" (with an 'S')?

Is it still possible to access posts on the old board? If so, I confess to failing totally and could use some guidance.

Thanks,

Yes, they are still there, what are you looking for: One message or everything?

I've to admit I can't seem to get into the topics list of the archive just right now but using the google site:rafcommands.com search certainly does work still.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am trying to find a thread that I think I started, don't recall the date. Do I have to log in? I have tried and it doesn't accept my log in name/password.

No, the old board is dead, no longer accessable, it is an Ex forum. You cannot log in, can't search from the old board itself, but you can search from Google.

For example I want to find an old thread containing the Airman porteus as above.

when searching in Google

using the string in the search box

porteous site:rafcommands.com that will allow google to search within RAFcommands domain for that word and return each example it finds.

Can you please suggest what your looking for as we have four posts here now and getting no where, what was the subject of the thread your looking for, any details at all I'm sure it can be found.

Here are some of your old posts:
http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=17292&forum=DCForumID6

816 Squadron Swordfish ?

bruce dennis
6th May 2009, 21:53
Good guess! 816 FAA was the first one I want. Sorry if it tried your patience, but the goal was to learn how to access the old forum, not to have someone do it for me. Perhaps others reading this updated account of how to search the Old Forum will benefit.

I didn't 'get it' when earlier posts in this thread refered to Google searches. Now I see the way, I will use Google to trawl for more.

Thanks for the help,

Bruce

Can folks see if this link works, its to the archives of the old forum, 'General Questions' section.

http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?forum=DCForumID6&az=list&archive=yes

The equivalent link for the old 'Useful Books and Research Materials' is throwing up an error.

http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?forum=DCForumID7&az=list&archive=yes

The first link did not work last evening on my home laptop using firefox. At work we have MS Internet Explorer 6.

been meaning to add this, if you get a result like this from Google:

http://www.rafcommands.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/Data/15601.txt

where the format is in text, running off the side of the screen

use this link format below, replacing the thread number with the one you want, in this case 15601

http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=15601&forum=DCForumID6&archive=yes

makes it more readable to say the least.

dennis_burke

The info above no longer works it seems in the new forum. Need to find the new format if there is one.

dennis_burke
8th December 2010, 08:52
Ok, as an interim,

if you get to this type of page froma google search:
http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=5694&forum=DCForumID6&archive=yes

The above is an old thread about Warwick BV247, a the moment it is throwing up the easyspace cover page.

Take the thread ID number , in this case 5694 and pop it into the old format

http://www.rafcommands.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/Data/5694.txt

You get a difficult to read but nevertheless readable text only version. This is simply the reverse of what I said above haha

dennis_burke
27th July 2011, 10:35
For those difficult to read old forum threads, a way to make them a little more readable

You will find this old thread, for example, full of the 'URL encoding', thats the % signs and codes etc:

http://www.rafcommands.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/Data/6401.txt

And since it difficult to read, copy and paste the text into this URL Decoder

http://www.opinionatedgeek.com/dotnet/tools/urlencode/Decode.aspx

click on the decode button

and it becomes a little more readable. I cannot see a way to batch decode the 18000 old threads however.

This link doesn't work any more. Is there any other way to access the old archives?

Hi Ladies and Gents,

Go to the old board
http://www.rafcommands.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi

Select the forum eg General

Click on archive on top right of table.

Click page 446 etc on top right

Select the required thread

Or use the old board search function but click the "search archives box" and limit the period to 1 year.

eg

Warwick BV247 site:www.rafcommands.com

put this into google and all the links will be found.

7th down is one from the old board.

Hello Jane,

is there a particular message you need to find?

Search for the terms your looking for in google and enter site:rafcommands.com after the words, then it will serach only for those words. if you have a serial number for example, input that.

The old forum exists only as information now, there is I guess no structure no inks etc, Just the data. Instructions in this thread explained that.

Hi Dennis,
Yes, I'm looking for a Steve Morris who posted a search in 2004 looking for relatives of John Aelred Sanders of the dambusters. He says John was his great uncle. I'm doing this research for my cousin who is John Sanders' daughter and wants to know anything about his family.

Any contact information would be appreciated.

Jane

The moderator on the forum asks us not to use the quote function, it always claear what message your replying too, it just takes up space on the servers.

This si the old message your referring too, Stve gave his email address in that message, have you emailed him at that address?

http://www.rafcommands.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/Data/4676.txt

Otherwise, thta was part of the old forum, so unless any of members who mailed him then might still be in contact. You really needed to have posted this on a new thread in themain forum to get the correct level of attention, title the thread with the airmans name.

Hi, Thank you, I found what I needed and made contact with the member I wanted.

I spent a good half day's of work (maybe more) put in to migrate all the older board posts to a more readable and user friendly format.

All the former "text" files etc in the dcforum folder .. eg

http://www.rafcommands.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/Data/15601.txt
http://www.rafcommands.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/Data/4676.txt

etc will automatically redirect to the new pages which are more readable and hopefully they will be indexed by Google as well.

new locations
http://www.rafcommands.com/archive/15601.php
http://www.rafcommands.com/archive/04676.php
As a matter of interest - there were 14000+ individual files which were former threads in that forum. which is about the same number of threads in the current forum.

dennis_burke
30th September 2013, 19:08
Well done Jagan (and anyone that helped you out). I trust this was possible is some automated fashion. Great resource, and great to be able to read them easily.

Jagan
30th September 2013, 20:58
Dennis,

Yes it was an automation script - done in VBScript that parsed the text files into php files. converting the special characters, inserting linebreaks , formatting titles etc..

it ran very fast. Conversion of the 14000 files took just a couple of minutes once the final script was done .. only the uploading was slow, taking atleast a couple of hours..

Jagan

Indexes added for the DCBoard Archive..

http://www.rafcommands.com/archive/index1.php (note the links to the 77 pages )

Around 470 old threads from May to Nov 2007 are not indexed, but the rest 14000 odd threads re linked through these 77 pages

The archive can also be accessed via the "DC Board Archive" menu link from the front page (next to RAF Commands Forum Menu Link)

Jagan
24th October 2013, 01:24
I was told that some of the individual posts that were coming up in Google were not linked to the index page. sure enough, it seems the index pages missed out nearly 13 more pages worth of posts.

So I have regenerated all the index pages. They now total 90
http://www.rafcommands.com/archive/index1.php

Going through the final pages I discovered another minor issue - Henk had made several posts on the older board which covered 1939 and early days of 1940. At some point we may want to move these to Henk's archive in the General Category forum? His 1939 posts start on Index Page 82
