I've just returned from Durban, South Africa where I spent about 10 days. I've also spent time at Durban High School, where my sister-in-law is head of department. She put me in touch with the school's archivist, who showed me Maj. Swales' miniature medals and presentation Lancaster.

Do you have any photos of Major Swales?? Durban High School has a photocopy of his flight logbook, his mother's scrapbook (which has the telegrams dealing with Major Swales' death, DFC and VC awards). The archivist tells me that it was extremely rare for one to be gazetted with the DFC and awarded the VC the same day.
