Hi out there. I'am robertjan brouwer, I'm Dutch, in search of my grandfather Douglas Monk born 17-may-1900 Farnham/Seale Surrey. At 17 het joined the RFC/RAF ATTESTION 1917 service nr. 155943 Mechanic.
Can somebody explain how and where I trace his path through the RAF. I know that he has been in Mesopotamia, but that is about it. livesofthefirstworldwar.org has some links to archives but Iyou need to take subscription.
Does somebody knows other sources I could go to?

His service record is available on findmypast.co.uk the website currently offers a 14 day free trial, if you put his name and date of birth in and tick the military records box his file comes up as the first hit.

I've just had a look and the pdf file of the Form 434 on findmypast has his various movements listed from April 1st 1918 to his discharge on November 29th 1921, and a list of his promotions from R.A.F. Boy to AC1. The reverse also mentions that the was Mentioned in Despatches, with the ref LG 19-4-21.

Can anybody advice me ref the award of the AE. Was it automatic, or did they have to apply, also I understand the operational duty in WW2 counted as double service, but what about a training unit, also was there any particular thing that say would warrant some one not getting a AE. I am a researcher at the Ulster Aviation Society in Northern Ireland.
