Default Lancaster collision, night of 7-8/Jan 1945 Unterpfaffenhofen

I have some information about the Lancaster crash which occured between 2200 and 2400 hrs on the night of 7/8 January 1945. The crash site was at Germering/Unterpfaffenhofen, about 10 nms WSW of the centre of Munich. One RAF and one RCAF aircraft were believed to have been involved. There were 14 dead and, a health warning, the reports seem to be inconsistent!

Can anyone help with the aircraft involved and the crews

    regards

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

    the aircraft concerned were:

405 Sqdn Lancaster PB229 - exploded in mid-air, according to German documents, at 22:30 hrs. Crew:

    F/O L.G. Sparling, RCAF
    F/Sgt R.A. Quinn, RCAF
    F/O J. Allan, RCAF
    F/O L.W. Splatt, RCAF
    P/O N.L.W. Scott, RCAF
    F/Sgt D.H. Brown, RCAF
    F/Sgt D. Veri, RCAF

635 Squadron Lancaster PB173 - exploded in mid-air, according to German documents, at 22:30 hrs. Crew:

    F/Lt R.M. Clarke, RAAF
    F/Sgt T. Robertshaw
    P/O W.T. Pethard
    P/O G.K. Hendy, RAAF
    F/Sgt C.D. Mountain
    P/O A.A. Wiggins
    F/Sgt J.H. Watson

Both aircraft were reported as crashing at Unterpfaffenhofen in fighter grid reference DC 4 (sic, actually DC 6)

Returning RAF crew reports noted a collision at around this time:

22:36 hrs, Munich, "Two Lanc seen to collide. Both blew up and then went down in flames."

22:28 hrs, Munich area, "Approx 100/200 yards N. slightly above 2 Lancs seen converging and then collide with violent exposion and burning debris seen falling."

To complicate matters, a German night fighter pilot, Ofw. GŁnther Bahr, appears to have claimed one of the two aircraft as an air combat victory, at 22:27 hrs.

    Cheers

    Rod
