    Default Sergeant Pilot Ronald Whitlam

I am searching on behalf of my wife for any records relating to the service, time of death and how he died, of Sergeant Pilot Ronald Whitlam. He was born in Thorne, South Yorkshire (then West Riding) in 1922 and died in 1943.
My wife was given to believe that he died in Canada whilst on a training flight. We now understand that this not true but do not know what the true circumstances were.

    Hi

He was probably killed whilst flying Oxford II, ED169 of No 20 (P) AFU which crashed on landing at Croughton.

His death certificate is registered in Brackley district, aged 21
    reference: 1943 April-May-June Quarter, Vol 3b page 2
You could order a copy form gro.gov.uk

    (P) AFU being - (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit. These were training units which aclimatised pilots trained overseas with the conditions of flying the the UK and Europe.

And you coudl order a copy of the crash card, Form 1180 for Oxford ED169 from the RAF museum Hendon. Go to their website and the research section and order by contacts given there.

ED169 collided on landing Croughton with Oxford HN385; death registered Brackley, Northamptonshire. (HN385 could land safely).
