    Default Air crew pay ww"2

Can anyone help,, My fathers Service record, show he joined the Raf In 1938,then in 1940 for 12months recived CREW
Pay..does this mean that at some time he would have part of a crew within a plane. his rank at this time is shown a LAC, should have stated he was at 1 Air armourment school MANBY in the later part of 1939

reason for this request is no where on the service record does it show him as aicraft crew

    Hi

At the time, gunners were members of ground crew who undertook the duties of air gunner on a voluntary basis but got Crew Pay (ie Flying Pay) of 6d (2.5p) per day extra on top of their normal pay.

Many of these airmen eventually became full air gunners with the rank of Sergeant but others simply reverted to their ground trades.
