    Default 408 (RCAF) Squadron, 27/3/1942

    Good evening
My first post on this forum, although I did make a few posts on the old message board and the responses were superb.
My question for today is - Can anyone tell me the details of how the following lost his life

    Name: BENTLEY, SAMUEL FREDERICK
    Initials: S F
    Nationality: United Kingdom
    Rank: Sergeant
    Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force
    Unit Text: 408 (R.C.A.F.) Sqdn.
    Age: 21
    Date of Death: 27/03/1942
    Service No: 633360
Additional information: Son of Joseph and Mary Jane Bentley; husband of Cynthia Elizabeth Bentley, of Stansted, Essex.

My reason for asking is I am currently finishing off a book remembering all those from the village of Stansted who lost their lives in both world wars. Just came across this guy.

    Many thanks
    Glyn

    Hi Glyn
Bentley was a member of the crew of Hampden L4140,EQ-B Bar that was lost without trace whilst minelaying in the Estuaries of the Jade and Weser rivers. 408 Sqn lost 3 a/c that night on the same task and it is possible that 2 were shot down by Hptm Helmut Lent who claimed 2 a/c that night. A third was claimed by Ofr Siegfried Ney who was himself killed that night.(Chorley Bomber Command Losses Vol 3)
