Default Memorial St Ann's Cemetery, Gosport, 12th August 1940

    Hello Henk

Hope you got my PM ok and thank you for your second correspondence.

I had several letters in 2005 about the Gosport Tragedy at a No. 933 (Balloon) Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force, balloon site, in Forton Road. According to one letter the following Service and Civilian details are on the Memorial:-

    Servicemen
    Cpl A. R. Barrell (864073)
    Cpl S. A. Croker (864772)
    LAC C. H. Chilcott (654152)
    Cpl R. W. Hollister (511553)
    LAC G. Mcelrea (548268)
    LAC H. Reed (630523)
    AC1 A. E. Grant (861990)
    AC1 A. J. Smith (743465)
    AC2 H. W. Hale (956410)
    AC2 R. F. Hill (956396)

    Civilians
    H. W. Gatesby
    C. J. Hastings

Information from H. J. Gasser of Gosport

    D. Croker also wrote about father, stating that when visiting 20 years later, the memorial was dismantled and piled against a wall.

An appeal was made to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Club and a new Plaque was placed under the flag pole of the Gosport Naval Cadets Compound with a Ceremony. The letter states that ten had been killed, plus two civilians and that there was also two survivors. The casualties occured during a raid on August 12th and the balloon site was hit.

In 1997 a new large stone monument with name plate was unveiled in St Ann's Hill Cemetery.

    Regards Mark
