    Default John Howard NANKIVELL (156261)

    Hi
I'm looking for any info on Fl/Lt John Howard NANKIVELL (156261).
He went ITW at Cambridge in 1941. Did he make it as a pilot or return to the army?
He resigned his commission in Feb. 1942.
Was he any relative of PETER JAMES NANKIVELL of 609 Sqdn.
    Cheers Motherbird.

A search for your s/n in the LG brings just three hits, but I'm sure the s/n you give for only J H NANKIVELL is an Army number. The LG for 19 Nov 1940 records a Cadet J H Nankivell becoming 2 Lt in the Lincolnshire Rifles, subsequently resigning his commission on 11 Feb 1942.

In the RAF the same s/n appears when P/O L W Hutchinson (Training Branch) resigns his commission on 6 June 1945.

I'm sorry I should have said that he was one of a few army officers who applied to transfer from the Army to the RAF in 1941.
I couldn't find an RAF number for him so I wondered if he actually did transfer. As you say he resigned his commission but normally when they did the Gazette reported that they have transferred to the RAF.
Could he possibly have gone on to join the New Zealand or Australian Air Force and that was why his name did not appear in the Gazette again?

I should have added I tried searching "Nankivell" for 1939-1950 as well, and although there were plenty of hits none were for your man. Perhaps Errol could answer your last question.

    Hi Motherbird,

I had a quick Googlebash and came up with the following thread on Rootsweb:-

    http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/ENG-LINCSGEN/2006-03/1143491359

Which suggests to me that he may have resigned his commission on grounds of ill health.

    HTH,

    Jeff
