    Default F/O A.J.F. HAY (J/21713) - KIA 88 Squadron - 22 March 1944

F/O A.J.F. HAY (J/21713) - KIA 88 Squadron - 22 March 1944. According to TSGNO: "Two Canadian members of the crew survived." Can anyone provide me the names of the additional crew members?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Christian,

Les Allison seems to have mixed things up a bit here. J/88340 P/O (W.Op./Air Gnr.) Clarence Walter HAY RCAF, was lost on 22/23-3-1944 in No.425 Sqn RCAF Halifax III LW417 (BCL5/125). J/21713 F/O Alan Joseph Fairfield HAY RCAF, of No.88 Sqn, was posted missing on 13-8-1943.

No.88 Sqn Boston IIIA BZ224 is known to have ditched while low-flying on 13-8-1943. Afraid I have no further details, maybe others can pick up the traces

    Hi Christian,

Chorley's 1944 (page 125) lists the second Canadian POW from LW417 as "Sgt RC Quinlan"

However, Ross' POW lists have him as R/156968 Sgt RG Quinlan and RCAF Casualty List 867 has him as Sgt Raymond George Quinlan of Hamilton, Ontario.

13 May 1944 Hamilton Spectator has a photograph of him.

    Regards,
    Dave

    Hi Dave,

    Thanks.

Any additional information on who was with F/O A.J.F. Hay (No.88 Sqdn.) aboard Boston IIIA BZ224 that was known to have ditched while low-flying on 13-8-1943?

    Regards,
    Christian

    Hello Christian,

No mention of any loss in No. 88 Squadron ORB for August 1943. Actually the form 540 skips from 12th to 16th August, and as there was no ops, no mention either in the form 541.

On 8th August 1943, F/O A.J.F. HAY flew with F/O W.D. POWELL (pilot) and Sgt A.G. PRINCE, on BZ225. BZ224 was flown by F/L G.R. PUSHMAN crew, on the mission against the naval stores at Rennes. Perhaps someone else will be able to pursue further, with these names.

Thanks Joss. Gives me a couple more names to follow up on now and hopefully someone can offer some additional insight as well.

    Hello Christian,

A further search into July 1943 confirms these 3 airmen flew together, still on BZ225, on 23rd, 26th and 29th July. A fourth airmen flew with them on the 23rd and the 26th, P/O R.D. ENGLAND.

So it's very likely the two airmen you are looking for are POWELL and PRINCE

Apologies for digging up an old thread - I was going over some old notes and I spotted an error:

There were two RCAF survivors of the Halifax LW417 crash:

    M.U.G Brine J.E. R190329 or J88341 PoW 3799 Stalag Luft 1 West

    regards
    Robert
