You probably have what is on the CWGC register, but if not here is the entry.

    Name: McCARROLL, WILLIAM
    Initials: W
    Nationality: United Kingdom
    Rank: Flight Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
    Age: 25
    Date of Death: 21/11/1943
    Service No: 103019
Additional information: Son of William John and Minnie McCarroll; husband of Gwendoline Mary McCarroll, of Belfast.
    Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
    Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 120.

I can't find anything in the ORB copies that I have but someone will come in with more info.

    Hello Harold,

I can trace him to belong to 4 (C) OTU according "War Deaths RAF", when he died.

Sorry, no aircraft serial number. Could be a Sunderland loss?

    Kind Regards

Thanks Amrit for your info on Sunderland L2168. Do you know the name of the airman who was killed in this accident and has a known grave.
I've five names on my 'unaccounted' list as missing for this day and three of them may have been on L2168 as well:
    Sgt Herbert C. ADAMS - 1320218 - Panel 140 (Runnymede),
    Sgt George E. APPS - 1337642 - Panel 140,
    F/Sgt Geoffrey McD. CURWOOD - RAAF 413175 - Panel 192 (3 OTU ? - no digital file NAA),
    F/Sgt John C. HAMER - 1079161 - Panel 136,
    Sgt Jack D. HIGSON - 1436423 - Panel 153.
I believe that Sgt Adams and one other airman may have been missing on Liberator AL562 of 4 FPP (engine failure crashed into sea off Burrow Head, Wigtownshire on a ferry flight Prestwick - Hawarden).
    Regards,
    Henk.

    Hello Henk,

Think you shall go after a 3 (C) OTU loss. I have added details to your list of unaccounted airmen.

"I've five names on my 'unaccounted' list as missing for this day and three of them
may have been on L2168 as well:

    Sgt Herbert C. ADAMS - 1320218 - Panel 140 (Runnymede), 3 (C) OTU

    F/Sgt John C. HAMER - 1079161 - Panel 136, 3 (C) OTU

Thanks Finn, will go for a 3 (C)OTU loss; it could be possible that they were assigned to 3(C)OTU and crewed the Liberator of 4 (C)OTU on the ferry flight from Prestwick to Hawarden.
Perhaps Ross may have an answer.

    Regards,
    Henk.

A bit of a belated partial answer.

    No.3 (C)OTU ORB states:

Night flying by Wellingtons from base:
Two aircraft on OFE3 failed to return.

The next day ASR searches are recorded both from No.3 (C)OTU and operational aircraft of No.19 Group.

So it looks like two Wellington losses both from the same unit.

ORB does not note crew names.

    Regards
    Ross
