    Default 400619 - Unaccounted airman - 19-6-1940

P/O Graham Derek Herbert BEARDON - 74663 - killed on active service 19-6-1940 - buried Massicault War Cemetery, Tunisia. CWGC lists him as 213 Sqn (19-6-1940 flying Hurricanes from Exeter); GRO lists him as 11 FTS (at that time Shawbury in Shropshire). 213 Sqn was in the Middle East in 1941 and later; is it possible CWGC's date of death is incorrect (scanning problem ?).
    Regards,
    Henk.

    Henk

his death is reported in the July 1940 edition of Flight so it seems that CWGC's date is correct. Also reported in The Times, Thursday, Jul 04, 1940

    Henk,

Beardon was killed ferrying a Hurricane (P2650?), from Marignane to North Africa. He crash-landed on a beach near Bizerta, and was killed. The full story of the ferrying effort is told in:

    Malta:The Hurricane Years 1940-41
    Shores,C.,B.Cull & N Malizia.
    London:Grub Street,1987
    pp.15-25 (see: p.22)

    Hi Alex,

    COOPER, Alfred Percy - AC1c - 648356 - RAF.

Martyn has him here as killed in a road accident

"The victims were Alfred Percy Cooper (20), air mechanic, of Cllpperby, Yarmouth, and George Harold Doult (22), private in the Green Howards. Cooper was walking towards Sutton Bank the Thirsk-Helmsley road, facing oncoming traffic, when a lorry driven by Pte. J. Elliott, of the Green Howards, ran into him."

    Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer,
    Saturday 13 July 1940

Incidentally, the Database still has Cooper as 'Unaccounted' - another one off the list?

    Regards,

    Jeff

    Hello

COCKERELL, Kenneth Andre - P/O - 70850 - he was killed in the same RTA as:

    LAWTON, Alan Blanchard - P/O - 42237 and
    WILLIAMS, Barbara Sarah Watkin - ACW1c - 883075

Newspaper reports record that Lawton and Miss Williams were in a car that collided head-on with a car driven by Cockerell on the Lincoln to Sleaford road at Temple Bruer in the early hours of the morning. Williams died instantly, Cockerell died in the ambulance on the way to hospital, and Lawton died in hospital. A verdict of "Death by misadventure" was returned at the inquest.

    Alex,
Great work as always. My comments:

    EGYPT
    GREEN, Roy Leslie - P/O - 44754 - RAF.
    Halfaya Sollum War Cemetery, Egypt.
    Blenheim IV - L9043 - 33 Sqn.
    >> Green was killed in a Gladiator, the serial is wrong at https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/C14502415 Does anyone know the correct serial?

    TUNISIA
    BEARDON, Graham Derek Herbert - P/O - 74663 - RAF.
    Massicault War Cemetery, Tunisia.
    Hurricane I - P2650 - 213 Sqn.
    >> CWGC agree on the date. However, TNA say 18 Jun 40, 4 Ferry Pilots Pool: https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/C16471420
213 Sqn was based in the UK at that time. Maybe P/O Beardon was attached to 4 FPP?

    WALPOLE, Leslie Bertram - Sgt - 745085 - RAFVR.
Castle Bromwich ( SS. Mary nd Margaret ) Churchyard, Warwickshire, UK.
    Anson I - N5087 - 608 Sqn
    >> The serial was N5067. The aircraft crashed on 16 Jun 40, with Walpole succumbing to his injuries three days later.

    Hello,

Re: Sgt/P/O Roy Leslie GREEN RAF.

In 1940, Britain supplied a batch of Gladiators to the Royal Egyptian Air Force (ex-N5875-N5892), these were given REAF serials, L9030-L9047*. Gladiator N5888/L9043 was repossessed by the RAF and operated with No.33 Sqn**. The 33 Sqn ORB indicates that N5888 was still painted up as L9043 when lost*** - hence the confusion.

MAW1/Shores et al/pp.27-8, states that Green was flying Gladiator N5888 when he was shot down and killed - well, maybe!
