    Default Aircrew buses

In speaking to a former 101 Squadron airman recently he told me the buses which carried aircrew to their Lancasters were of Canadian make.

He described them to me as "large enough to carry three whole crews, with big double doors at the back"

Does anybody know which company manufactured these vehicles?

    Many thanks in advance.

I would say that since the vehicles were made in moderate numbers they were made by more than one manufacturer. The chassis, engine etc would have come from one of the big companies and the body fashioned by a specialist coachbuilder (many of whom were also making aircraft and aircraft parts).

    Al,

I think these were the four wheeled variant which were on Dodge chassis, they sometimes appear in the background to photos taken at dispersal; from memory there is at least one shot in one of the Lancaster at War volumes.

There were also six wheeled variants which were on Austin and Fordson chassis. Mann Egerton in and around Norwich did the coach body work for these but other companies were almost certainly involved.

The larger buses used for transfering aircrews were all of the six wheeled variety. If they were on a Canadian chassis they would have been either Ford or Chevrolet with the Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) cab.
