    Default SAAF archives

    Hi Peter

The real expert on all things concerning South African aviation is Dave Becker. He is a well known historian and aviation photographer based in Joburg. Unfortunately, I don't have a contact link, but I'm sure that he'll be Google-able if you persevere.

    Good luck.

It used to be The Department of Defence in Pretoria but they always seem to be short staffed & so you may not get a reply for a while -if you write .Or you could try this email: sandfdoc@mweb.co.za

Another way is the South African airforce assoc: www.saafa.co.za
Someone may be able to help if you put a query on their website ?

One has to be next of kin to get RAF men service records in UK but the RAAF records, which you can request [at a charge] to have digitalised, if not already done can be looked at online at National Archives of Australia website.

I am aware of RAAF archives....I am saving it for later as the way seems OK, so I need to check for other materials, which are unknown to get for now.

    Peter,

I applied for the service record of a SAAF pilot by e-mail but heard nothing back, so I was pleasantly surprised after receiving it in the post it a few months later.

    This is taken from http://www.saairforce.co.za

How to Obtain a Personnel Record:

Records of all South African servicemen in the Army, Navy and Air Force are held in the SANDF archives. Copies of service records can be acquired if application is made in writing.

Records cannot be sent electronically and therefore a fax number or postal address must be included in the request.

    SANDF Documentation Service Directorate
    (Personnel Division)
    The Senior Staff Officer
    Documentation Centre
    Private Bag X289
    Pretoria
    0001
    South Africa

    E-mail: sandfdoc@mweb.co.za
    Telephone: +27 12 339 4600
    Fax: +27 12 339 4631

The approximately 3 million personnel records in the Department of Defence Archives are indexed according to a specific convention. You are therefore requested to provide the Documentation Centre with as much detail as possible regarding the person you are seeking information on. The following are guidelines:

    a. Regimental number
    b. Identity number or date of birth
    c. Place of birth
    d. Date of assumption of military service
    e. Date of discharge from military service
    f. Regiment/unit where the person served
    g. Name and address of next-of-kin at the time of his attestation
