    Default Target Indicators

    Hi there everyone
Thanks to everyone who answered my last posting, this time I'm after a little technical information about Pathfinder aircraft. One of the aircraft I'm investigating is a PFF Lancaster (PB228) which I believe was used as a Marker/Backerup/Supporter.
I'm keen to find out about the Target Indicator system on Lancasters, like where on the A/C were the TIs stored? How many TIs did each aircraft carry? How were they launched?
If anyone has any information on this, I'd like to hear from you. Many thanks

    hello captain_m,

As far as I know, most Target Indicators were simply 250lb bombs with a different filling and they were carried exactly as 250lb HE bombs. In the early days, some different devices were used like the 4000lb Pink Pansies.

    Best wishes,

    Jérémie

A simple but neat little slide show showing how targets were marked:

A good shot of how TIs were loaded can be found on the IWM site:

and finally, technical details on another forum:

The link below is for a US Navy published "British Explosive Ordnance" manual dated 1946 and has a section covering all the Target Indicators we used starting at page 127 of the manual.

I believe it was taken off that site as too far removed from the site's original purpose.
