    Default Spitfires/Seafires lost12. Sep. 44 Norway

    Dear mates,

    an original German document I recently received a copy of states two "Spitfires" lost SW Alesund/Norway at 12.00 hrs. local time. Are these probably Seafires which failed to reach their carrier due to fuel starvation etc.?

    Hello,

    Sounds like "Wishful Thinking", on the part of German signal snoops!

    Operation" Begonia" - 12-9-1944.

    Her (HMS Furious), last operational range was launched on September 12, 1944, when eight aircraft from each of the two Seafire squadrons took off to cover a minelaying strike by 18 Avengers from "Trumpeter". 801 Squadron was flying close escort while 880 provided top cover; the latter was reduced to six aircraft when two Seafires developed drop-tank fuel transfer problems and had to return to the ship. The mines were accurately laid in the narrow Aaramsund Channel and the escort was free to harry a convoy consisting of a freighter, a small coaster, and four escorts, while 880 Squadron stood watch overhead. The final score was remarkable: for the loss of Sub-Lieutenant M. A. Glennie RNVR and the damaging of three other Seafires by flak, 801 Squadron claimed to have sunk an M-class minesweeper and to have damaged the largest merchant ship. In point of fact, they were under-estimating the effect of their strafing, for they had sunk two patrol vessels - VP5307 and VP5105 - and as well as stopping and setting the 4,500 gross ton "Deutsche Levante" on fire, they had also set the coaster on fire as well.
