Default Capts. Harry Hayman & Norman Hayman of 34 Sqdn SAAF

A contact has asked if I can give him some information about these two SAAF men, his grandfather and great uncle .

Supposedly they flew to Warsaw on the supply airlifts but I can't find a record of this .

Norman may have received a DFC for mine dropping on the Rhine which means he might have been based in England at some time ?? Harry was an Adjutant at 34 SAAF base

    Thanks

Try 178 Sqn for Norman Hayman, that's where he was when he earned his DFC. It's probable that he was mining the Danube, rather than the Rhine.

The timing for his involvement in the Warsaw airlift is about right.

The Liberator sqns of the RAF and SAAF were greatly 'intermingled' and mixed crews of Brits and south africans were commonplace in the Med in late '44 and early '45 (not forgetting other Commonwealth crews as well).

Somewhere I have a book on 178 Sqn about this period but I can't lay my hands on it nor remember the title - thinking cap going on now!!

Thank you .I'll pass it on .178 RAF were involved in the Warsaw airlifts but I can't find a Hayman in my Warsaw flights books. 31 & 34 were sister sqdns at Celone, Foggia .

Yes, probably the Danube rather than the Rhine

See my post : 31 Sqdn SAAF KH158 crew memorial plaque in Italy.
Now on page 2 but the post pages move swiftly

205 Group mined the Danube only. And 178 were actively involved in this, along with the SAAF Liberator squadrons.

I don't think Peter [my contact] knows if his gr uncle was in 178 but I've forwarded information & suggested he probably mined the Danube rather than the Rhine .

    thanks
