Default 77 Squadron loss 16th Feb 1942, Sgt R Kemp RNZAF, Sgt G Millar RCAF

I am researching the incident in which at least two aircrew were killed on 16th Feb 1942.

They are listed in the CWGC website as serving with 77 Squadron, the two airmen are buried at Colerne; Sgt Reginald Kemp (21) RNZAF the observer and Sgt George Millar (25) RCAF was the pilot.

I am assuming that their aircraft crashed near RAF Colerne, does anyone have any additional information?

    Glenn,

From my trilogy 'For Your Tomorrow - A record of New Zealanders who have died while serving with the RNZAF and Allied Air Services since 1915 (Volume One: Fates 1943-1998)':

    Sun 15/Mon 16 Feb 1942
    Bomber Command

Raid on St Nazaire, France (by 26 aircraft - 3 lost)
77 Squadron, RAF (Leeming, Yorkshire - 4 Group)
Whitley V Z9231/U - took off at about 1800 captained by Flt Sgt G R Millar, RCAF, and on return to England at 0020 crashed with a failed engine while attempting an emergency landing at Colerne airfield, Wiltshire. All five crew died, the captain and observer being buried at Colerne.
Observer: NZ404494 Sgt Reginald Andrew KEMP, RNZAF - Age 21. 295hrs. 9th op.

The others who died were Sgt G A Anson, Sgt C D E Campbell and Sgt W Powell (appears as Powers in BCL but error). All three were RAFVR.
