    Default Glider Pilot DFM

    Hi all,

I'm presuming that Tavender records citations/recommendations for DFM's to Glider Pilot Regiment soldiers? If so, would anyone be so kind enough to look up Staff Sergeant Edgar Raspison (3131992), GPR, who's DFM was announced in LG August 1945.

    Cheers,

    Tom

From Tavenderís The DFM register for the Second World War : -

Rapisson Edgar 3131992 Staff Sergeant, Glider Pilot Regt.

On 24th. March 1945, during the airborne assault on the Rhine, North of Wesel, this NCO was captain and pilot of a glider carrying a forward observation officer of the 53rd. Airborne Light Regiment R.A. and was briefed to land with one of the Forward Infantry Battalions. His glider was hit by anti-aircraft fire and his second pilot and three of the passengers were wounded. In spite of this and a further 20 mm. shell through the perspex of the cockpit, Staff Sergeant Rapisson pressed home his landing with great determination and reached his briefed position without further damage to the glider or its load. Although under considerable small arms fire, Staff Sergeant Rapisson directed the unloading of his glider so successfully that the forward observation officer was able to bring his section into action almost immediately after landing. This NCOís skill and determination greatly assisted to gain the objective in the main operation.
