    Default aircraft crash information request

A Ukrainian friend told me the story of an aircraft travelling from the direction of Grantham, hitting some trees, dropping his bomb load and skimming the POW/DP camp on Pottergate, Wellingore. Passing low over the camp it crossed the road and crashed in the field. Seven on board were killed. The Canadians erected a crude monument nearby within the camp boundary. The monument, a tall fluted pillar was there circa 1950 when the camp closed.
He seemed to remember it being a Lancaster and happening in 1942, before he arrived from the POW camp in Rimini.

I wonder if anybody can confirm whether a crash matching this description has been recorded anywhere.

Not a Lancaster, but possibly the 301sqdn Wellington (T2518) that crashed at Wellingore on 01/01/41, killing all but one on board.
    P/O B.R. Mirawski
    P/O B. Dzuibinski

Thanks Alan. I saw this one and did wonder. Would the Canadians place a monument here because they were the nearest?

    psm,
Can't comment on the memorial being put there by the Canadians. This aircraft may not even be the one concerned, although it's a good contender.

    Hi,

I was just trying to tell you do not use function "Reply With Quote" but only the button at the bottom "Reply to Thread":-)

The book about 311 Sq is ready, manuscript submitted so I am waiting for the publisher when he will put it on the plan.
