    Default 142 Sqn Wellington III DF552 - 6/7-5-1943

    Hello,

Seeking complete crew for the following incident:

    6/7-5-1943
    No.142 Sqn
    Wellington III DF552 'R'

Took off 2345 Fontaine Chaud, detailed to attack docks at Trapani. Target bombed after flying through a severe electrical storm. On return journey weather conditions worsened, and, low on fuel, the Wellington crash-landed 0720 on a beach, just south of Cap Oum Achiche. None of the crew were injured, and returned safely to unit on 9-5-1943.

1271573 Sgt (Pilot) Harry Benjamin Rees VENNING RAFVR (later DFM)

    Any additional information/corrections welcomed.

    Col.

    Col,
For some unknown reason, the Details of Work section of the ORB for May 43 is missing, although, oddly enough, the page numbers do not have any breaks in them, but i can tell you that all through the book up to end of April, the Venning crew were....

    Sgt H.B.R. Venning.
    Sgt P.D. Sherwood, DFC, Nav.
    Sgt B. Hargreaves, W/Op.
    F/O F.M. Churchouse, A/B.
    Sgt K.L. Jeffries, A/G.

Also continued with same crew from June onward.
    Alan.

    G'Day Alan,

Much appreciate you taking the time to ferret out that info.

My source (Venning), only mentions three other crew members. He refers to them as: 'Pat' (probably Sherwood), 'Jeff' (probably Jeffries) and 'Tich' (possibly Churchouse*) ). Venning's own aircraft, 'B', was unservicable on the 6-5-43, so he took over Harbottle's 'R', when he was taken ill.

    * 123852 F/O Frederick Maxwell CHURCHOUSE RAFVR

142 squadron had just moved to Fontaine Chaud on 5-5-1943.

I'm a bit concerned about the DFC for the Nav., "Sgt" Sherwood. I thought DFC's were only awarded to Officers and Warrant Officers.

    Notwithstanding, a big thank you,

    Col.
