Default 25 March 1942 Me 109 shot down by Spitfires off Malta

    Hello all,

On can please provide more details on the encounter between the Me 109's of II./JG 3 and Spitfires off Malta on 25 March 1942? During this encounter Lt Rudolf Wicklaus of 4./JG 3 was shot down, baled out and rescued wounded by the Germans. Thank you for your help.

    Best regards.
    Rob

    Hi Rob,

In the book 'Spitfires over Malta' by Brian Cull it says that six spitfires took off to intercept a group of Me109's over the Grand Harbour. It seems likely that P/O Don McLeod attacked a Messerschmitt of 4/JG3 flown by Lt Rudolf Wicklaus, who was wounded but succeeded in returning to Sicily. S/L Grant shot down a Messerschmitt into the sea off Gozo, the pilot managed to bail out and was rescued later by a Do24 from Sicily, this pilot was Fw Max Fischer of Stab II/JG3.

Looks like there may have been some confusion. I hope that helps.

    Regards,

    John.

    Hello John,

    Thanks for the info.

Lt Rudolf Wicklaus of 4./JG 3 came down 50 km south of Pozzallo on 25 March 1942.

Fw Max-Bruno Fischer of Stab II./JG 3 baled out just after 1320 hours (German time) at 10 km north of Malta after being hit by Flak on 26 March 1942. He was rescued by a Dornier Do 24.

There seems to be some confusion. Any more details available?

    Best regards,
    Rob
