Default Martinet NR418 Gt Massingham 22.01.45 - Additional Casualties

    Dear All,

Following take off from Great Massingham, on the 22.01.45, NR418 entered a snowstorm at which point the pilot appears to have become disorientated and made his return approach too low, striking the tail of Mosquito MM644 and crashing into the station radar hut. Whilst Warrant Officer APPLEBY (1113899) was injured two airmen in the radar hut lost their lives, can anyone confirm the names of these Airmen or the five others injured?

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Tim

    Hi all:

Since the late 70s I've had in my shambles of a filing system, a list of incidents at Gt Massingham. I am now inclined to believe they must have come from the station ORB.

From my notes, the Martinet crash is recorded thus:

"22.1.45 M.23 Martinet T.T.1 NR-418 of 1694 (B.D.) T.U. crashed on a hangar at Gt Massingham, killing 2 airmen working in radar workshop, injuring pilot and a number of other airmen. Winch operator reported himself fit for duty 48 hours later."

Doesn't really tell you anything new, but included for interest. Many thanks for padding out the background and casualty details on this crash.
