    Default 78 Sqn - Halifax II JD306 - 2/3-9-1943

    Hello,

Seeking a complete crew for the following incident:

Bill Chorley (in BCL4/306), states that No.78 Sqn Halifax II JD306 EY-X, whilst out on a training exercise on 2/3-9-1943, was hit by anti-aircraft fire at 2302 and abandoned near Haycastle, 6 miles NW of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. No injuries reported. Chorley names only a F/O J C Smith as crew.

I believe the F/O J C Smith mentioned above, is actually - 120608 F/O (Pilot) John Gellatley SMITH RAFVR. AUS408304 Sgt (Air Gnr.) Geoffrey Julian WOODS RAAF, is known to have baled out of an unidentified aircraft near Fishguard, Wales, on 2-3-1943.

SMITH, and his No.78 Sqn crew (including WOODS RAAF), failed to return from Frankfurt on 20/21-12-1943 (BCL4/432).

Has there been any advancement the on current knowledge re the make-up of SMITH's crew on 2/3-9-1943?

    Chris,

Thanks. Certainly an improvement on the Halifax File, p.64 (now a bit dated), which quotes 20-9-1943 as the date of this incident. One of our Forumites (Daz), has stated in the past, that JD306 was on a Bullseye exercise at the time of its loss.

We have, at Elvington, John Erricker's research on 78 Sq. I have found a collection of files on each aircraft loss. I will check for JD306.

    John,

    That information most welcome.

Thank you for going to the trouble of weeding it out.

    Much appreciated.

    Default Evader/POW Reports

The National Archives at Kew have copies of the above reports and if you can get someone to do a look see and send you a copy they are some of them really interesting..
