Default AUS408380 W/O James Esca WILLIAMSON RAAF

    Hello,

AUS408380 W/O James Esca WILLIAMSON RAAF, was killed in action on 24/25-5-1944 in No.640 Sqn Halifax III MZ675 (BCL5/243). Have the details on this event.

On 3/4-3-1944, No.640 Sqn Halifax III LW516, was tasked for a "Bullseye" exercise. After the port inner failed, the aircraft crashed at Fairey Hall, near Hexton, Herts. The pilot, 1412783 F/Sgt Denzil JONES RAFVR, was killed. Bill Chorley, in BCL5/108, names only JONES of this crew. I believe AUS408380 F/Sgt (W.Op./Air Gunner) James Esca WILLIAMSON RAAF, was also aboard LW516 and baled out safely, thus becoming a member of the "Caterpillar Club".

Can anyone provide a full crew list for LW516 on 3/4-3-1944?

    Appreciate any help/corrections offered.

    Col.

Book acknowledges crash but doesn't give crew details in my original copy. Revised version maybe different. I can contact Bill Norman if you prefer.

    John,

If you could contact Bill Norman that would be great. I understand the problems, any help you can give would be most appreciated. No rush, this has been on the back-burner since 1984!

    Henk,

Not yet! At least, not from Bill Norman. We will have to wait awhile for that.

I am 99.9% sure that WILLIAMSON was aboard LW516 on 3/4-3-1944.

    Here is the evidence:

RAAF Personnel who are Members of the Caterpillar Club.

    Date: 3-3-44
    Name: F/Sgt J. E. Williamson.
    Where landed: England

    See:
    Ripcord Australia

WW II RAAF Caterpillar Club Members

    Name: Williamson, J E
    Rank: F/Sgt.
    Date: 3-3-44
    Place of descent: England.

    See:

Williamson was posted in to 640 Sqn on 7-1-1944. The bale-out took place on 3/4-3-1944. There are no other losses associated with 640 Sqn at this time, only LW516. Williamson was KIA with 640 Sqn on 25-5-1944.

Corroboration from Bill Norman would seal it. Other crew members would be icing on the cake!

I have spoken to Bill Norman. No crew list in the ORB. Williamson flew one mission with W/C Earys, one with Don Cameron and 6 with Marriott including the fatal op to Aachen. Denzil Jones probably came from 'C' Flt of 158 Sq, the core of 640 but didn't fly with 640 until the loss of LW516 so no previous crew info unless it lies with 158 Sq.

    John,

Williamson was posted in to 640 Sqn from 158 Sqn, so it looks likely Jones was likewise.

I appreciate your help on this one. Please pass on my thanks to Bill Norman, mighty sporting of him!

26081 W/C Douglas Joyce EAYRS C.B.,C.B.E.,D.F.C., spent quite some time out here in OZ during the war, mainly in training command positions. He actually force-landed a CFS (Camden), Avro Trainer, A6-23 on 10-11-1941. EAYRS, and his pupil, 406097 Sgt John Henry RUST RAAF ( a KIWI), were uninjured.

EAYRS departed Australia for the UK in March 1943. He passed away on 25-9-1992.
