    Hello everyone

Can anyone help with any details (RAF unit, place and cause of death etc.) for the above casualty, buried in Bedlington (St. Cuthbert) Church Burial Ground in Northumberland? He was killed on November 6th, 1941, aged 27.

    Many thanks

You can check the death register index for free at freebmd.org.uk

Shows him listed in Ploughley and Bullingdon district, Oxfordshire.

Same pages of the register have:
    SMITH Montford 18 Ploughley 3a 2227
    Dott William 27 Ploughley 3a 2228
    Goff Ralph 25 Ploughley 3a 2228
    Green Stanley W 25 Ploughley 3a 2228
    Hatherill Reginald E 20 Ploughley 3a 2228

    005 GOFF R 1064090 - 06/11/1941 ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE
    SEC. A. GEN. GRAVE 1290.
006 GREEN SW 1256366 - 06/11/1941 ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE
    SQUARE 58. GRAVE 109868.
007 HATHERILL RE 932189 - 06/11/1941 ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE
    SEC. 5. GRAVE 6.

Montford Smith seems to be unrelated, not an Air Force Casualty. the other deaths on the pages before and after 2228 are all older people and one infant.

And they were not mentioned in Henk's old thread so I'll guess at a Bomber Command OTU or similar crash?

Top stuff Henk, thank you so much. To confirm what Dennis posted earlier, the AB Hampden File has the following for P5386:

Night bombing exercise. Dived into ground 2m east of Chalgrove, Oxon. Sgt R E Hatherill, Sgt S W Green, Sgt R Roff, Sgt W Dott all killed.

By the way, would this aircraft have carried codes?

    Regards

    Simon
