    As a favour for someone who has been sent this man's disc and would like to know more if poss.

    Your in luck, that number seems to be his NCO number, he was commishioned as an officer in 1943 per the London Gazette, normally the search engine never finds the enlistment numbers due to the way the text was scanned and converted.

    5th Mar. 1943.
    657643 Alfred Vernon SHIRLEY (151431).

    he, however was not in such luck, he was killed in 1944 with 61 Squadron over Germany.

    I am in contact with his son and he will be so pleased as he didn't think it was his fathers,as he didnt know anything about his NCO number but was going by his service number!!
    How brilliant!
    I have just done a write up for the Aircrew Remembrance Society on the crew and his dad.
