    Default 242 Sqn - S/Ldr Eric Trenchard-Smith (32253)

    Hi,

I am after any information relating to the above RAF pilot (possibly recorded with no hyphen in surname). According to a 1941 newspaper article he was of Australian descent, commanding officer of 242 Sqn RAF when shot down in Jun 41 and also received a decoration (?) for ‘notable service’ on the north-west frontier, possibly 20 Sqn RAF. Having looked through the LGs and Flight Global I have been able to piece together details of rank/promotion and also the following

23 Sept 32 – granted short service commission
29 Sept 34? – posted to 20 Sqn RAF at Peshawar, India
2 Dec 37 – possibly posted to 607 Sqn AuxAF
    23 Sept 38 – permanent commission
    1940? – flying instructor UK
17 Jun 41 – one of three pilots of 242 Sqn RAF shot down during Circus 13. Trenchard-Smith was in Hurricane Z3246 and became a PoW at Stalag Luft VI
1 Oct 55 – retired from RAF as Wing Commander.

I am fairly certain he is not the same E.T. Smith who served with 237 Sqn.

Thanks in advance for any additional details.

    Regards, Drew H

    Default Eric Trenchard-Smith

    Drew.

All I can add is that he joined 242 Sq. on April 28th 1941.

Is he related to Edward Trenchard-Smith of 43 Sq. 1943?

    Drew,

according to RAF Fighter Squadrons by Rawlings, pg. 344:

    COs of 242 Sq:

    S/L D.R.S. Bader Jun 40-Mar 41
    S/L W.P.F. Treacy Mar 41-Apr 41
    S/L W. Whitney-Straight Apr 41-Jul 41

    So nothing about your man...

Thanks for the details John and Pavel.

Yes thanks Pavel, I had already visited those provided links. I suspected Whitney-Straight was probably 242’s CO between Apr-Jul 41……wonder if Trenchard-Smith was a supernumery or flight commander?

John, I am not sure whether he is related to the 43 Sqn Edgar Trenchard-Smith . According to the information at hand (see Pavel’s link to Trove newspaper) the father of Eric had a first name initial of ‘O’ (was deceased by 1941) while his mother was ‘E’. The RAAF service file for Edgar is a little confusing. On one page his mother is listed as Mrs B Trenchard-Smith, then on another as Sidney while other pages make reference to his father as Sidney/Sydney!
