Default Fg. Off. John A. Ainge RNZAF, 485 Sqn, killed 24 Sep 1943

I understand that 485 Sqn's Fg. Off. John A. Ainge RNZAF was killed on Ramrod 242 to Évreux-Fauville Airfield on 24 September 1943 in Spit IX, MH470. However, the 11 Group ORB Appendix indicates that the High Cover Wing, of which 485 Sqn formed a part, saw only two small formations of enemy aircraft in the Seine area, which were not engaged. Nonetheless, they lost Ainge. Can anyone provide me the circumstances under which he was lost, please?

    Thanks

    Steve,

From my 'For Your Tomorrow - A record of New Zealanders who have died while serving with the RNZAF and Allied Air Services since 1915 (Volume Two: Fates 1943-1998)':

    Fri 24 Sep 1943
    FIGHTER COMMAND

Ramrod 242 - escorting USAAF Marauders raiding the airfield at Évreux, France
485 Squadron, RNZAF (Biggin Hill, Kent - 11 Group)
Spitfire LF.IX MH470 - took off at 1100 and last seen over France diving away below the Squadron. The pilot, buried at Dieppe, is thought to have experienced an oxygen failure, as no contact with the enemy had taken place.
Pilot: NZ415279 Fg Off John Albert AINGE, RNZAF - Age 22. 560hrs.

    Hi Errol

Thanks for that - quick as a flash! And I would have thought you would have been tucked up in bed by that time!

    Cheers
