    Please can anyone assist with information regarding the following SPITFIRES during there times at 53 OTU .

    1/ SPITFIRE K9801 ARRIVED 53 OTU 14/7/42, E/CUT BELLYLANDED STORMY DOWN 6/2/43 , PILOT NAME?

    2/ SPITFIRE K9817 ARRIVED 53 OTU 17/7/41,U/C COLLAPSED NORTHHOLT 2/6/42, PILOT NAME /DETAILS OF CRASH?

    3/ SPITFIRE K9823 ARRIVED 53 OTU 17/7/41,ACCIDENT 12/10/41 ,PILOT NAMES /DETAIL OF CRASH?
    K9823 E/CUT ,C/L 2MLS S.E.OF LLANDOW ,14/3/42,PILOT NAME /DETAILS OF CRASH .

    4/ SPITFIRE K9850 ,CAT AC 17/7/41, U/C JAMMED FERRY FLT TO 53 OTU ON 17/7/41,BY 4 FPP , BELLYLANDED PRESTWICK .PILOT NAME /DETAILS OF CRASH

    5/ SPITFIRE K9865 ,ARRIVED 53 OTU 20/2/43, ACCIDENT 26/7/44,SOC 16/8/44 , PILOT NAME /DETAILS OF CRASH

    6/ SPITFIRE K9942,ARRIVED 53 OTU 10/4/43, CAT B 22/10/43, PILOT NAMES /DETAILS OF CRASH.

    7/SPITFIRE K9997, ARRIVED 53 OTU ,25/10/41, SWUNG ON LANDING AND TIPPED UP LLANDOW 24/1/42.
    AND LATER HIT BY X 4891 ????, AND DBR .PILOT NAME , DETAILS OF CRASH .

    ,HOPE SOME ONE CAN HELP IT SEEMS THE 1180 FOR THESE CRASHES HAVE GONE MISSING AT HENDON

    Hi Phil,
    I have K9850, 4 FPP at 1740hrs Cat Ac, Kinloss, u/c failed to lower both. hydraulic & emergency systems failed.

    Back again,
    24-1-42, K9997, 53 OTU, Llandow, 1500hrs, Cat A, Swung off runway landing, tipped on nose. Sgt WJ Basley RAAF 407613.

    I have K9801 on 6-2-43, 53 OTU Stormy Down, Glamorgan at 1815hrs Cat Ac, Engine failure in flight, pilot left formation at 7,000ft when white hot vapour emmitted from manifold. Glided towards airfield but insufficient height. landed wheels up on lee of airfield. F/Sgt GS Wilson 1007094.

    Only half answer for K9823. 53 OTU, 2mls SE/Llandow, Engine failuer due to glycol leak. Crashed landed. P/O EL Miller 1422044 (USA)

    I can add the following:

    E.L. Miller = Ervin Lloyd "Dusty" Miller, who later flew with 130 and 133 Sq. before transferring to USAAF.

    WJ Basley = Willoughby John "Bill" Basey (spelling!), who later flew with 603, 132 and 457 Sq.

    Hi Phill

    F/Sgt GS Wilson 1007094 is George S. Wilson, born Trinidad, 13 May 1922, posted to 41 Squadron on conclusion of OTU, serving 11 March-ca. 20 May 1943 (i.e. last mentioned in ORB on this date). Presently, I know nothing more of his wartime postings after 41 Sqn, as I have been unable to locate any mention in the CWGC database, nothing in Ross' POW database, nothing of commissioning or promotions in the London Gazette, and no mentions of any real assistance on the 'net.
