Default Has anyone downloaded the whole of AIR78 Indexes?

If so how much storage was involved

I started but gave up when I realised that the first 10 references I downloaded (approx 20 PDF files) was 4 GB - I would image the whole lot is well over 100 GB

    Thanks

I have a similar experience, and since I have found the information of little additional value for me. Hence, I will only download parts of it.

I think you estimate of more than 100 GB might be right. 180 parts, 2-3 files in most of them, 250 MB per file.

    Hi Paul and Mikkel,

105 GB are required for the entire AIR78 index - I have a copy on an external hard disk.

    best regards

I've downloaded the following from AIR 78:

    4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 25, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 38, 39, 44, 46, 48, 50, 51 & 52.

All to an external hard drive.

I'm sure that if they were transcribed into a proper database then the whole lot could be done for less than 20Mb, but that would be a massive undertaking.

I am going to ask the obvious here but as many will know I find the NA website difficult at best these days.

How do I go about dowloading this as when I browse for the files I end up having no idea how or where to download the files from.

    Can anyone help?

    You might find this useful,

    - Go to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/digital-microfilm.asp
    - Scroll down to AIR 78 in the list of Digital Microfilms
    - Click on the title 'Air Ministry and Ministry of Defence: Department of the Air Member for Personnel: Index to Airmen and Airwomen', not AIR 78, they take you to different pages on the NA website.
    - The URI for that is http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/search-results.asp?searchtype=browserefine&query=scope%3d %22name%20range%22&catid=32&pagenumber=1&querytype =1&mediaarray=*&sortspec=scope+asc
    - Find the reference you are after and click on 'See Details'
    - Click 'Add to Shopping'
    - If you want more than 1 reference click on 'Continue Shopping', if you only want the one click on Checkout.
    - Enter a valid e-mail address and follow instructions.

The order processing script seems to be particularly bad, I have to let it timeout (which can take 20 minutes) and then go back in through the link provided on the e-mail or refreshing the page to get to downloads (I'm using Firefox so it may be something related to cross browser compatability, but being a .gov.uk website I bet it's just someone making a mistake in the script).
