    Default Training Aircraft Losses 1942

Please can anybody add to the following accidents:

    1. On 9 January 1942, Oxford X6657 of 14 (P)AFU crashed into a builders hut at Lyneham. The pilot, Sgt Thomas G Smith, died of his injuries and three civilian workmen were killed and two injured. Does anybody know the names of the workmen?

    2. On 9 November 1942, Anson AX322 flew into high ground near Moneymore, Co. Tyrone. Were there any casualties?

    3. On 28 November 1942, Anson DJ635 crashed in Wales. The identified crew were: Sgts D E Johnson RCAF and C R Morgan RNZAF, with: LACs J R Knowles and G Ross. Who was the fifth fatal casualty?

    Colin,

For the 9 Jan 1942 accident you give 14 (P)AFU as the unit concerned, but according to "Wings over Wiltshire" (Rod Priddle) it was never at Lyeham.

The reference states that 14 SFTS arrived at Lyeham on 16 August 1941 and stayed six months. Then (quote):

    "No 14 SFTS left for Ossington on 20 January 1942 to form No 14 (P)AFU .... .",

which suggests the unit didn't form until after 9 Jan.

There's no mention of 14 (P)AFU at Lyeham here, either http://www.raf.mod.uk/raflyneham/aboutus/historyww2.cfm

    Gents

The Oxford File has X6657 on charge to 14 SFTS from 26/10/1941.
