Default 608 squadron Hudson Loss 22-23/05/42 Norway

    hello Linzee,
    From Geoff's 1939-1947 search engine.
    Four 608 Sqdn names

Callaghan, G. B. Lt. (Pilot) SAAF.
Cameron, William Muir. Sgt (W.Op/Air Gnr) RAFVR
    Both Trondheim (Staune) Cemetery.
    Colley, Douglas George. Sgt RAFVR
    Runnymede Memorial.
Davie, Arthur Collins. Sgt (Obs) RAFVR
    Bergen (Mollendal) Church Cemetery.

Only Hudson that would fit is serial number AM620.
A question, was Callaghan a South African as the CWGC and Winston Brent's "85 Years of SAAF" has him or an American as Andrew Hendrie has him in his book "Lockheed Hudson in World War II" ?

    Hi Linzee,

    22/05/52
    AM620
Op: Unst crossover patrol. Took off Sumburgh at 19:59 hrs

    Lt G B Callaghan SAAF
    Sgt A C Davie
    Sgt D G Colley
    Sgt W M Cameron

Took off from Wick but landed at Sumburgh to refuel. Reported attacking U-boat in position 61 57N 01 15W and scoring two hits but failed to return. Lt Callaghan, a South African, and Sgt Cameron are buried in Stavne Cemetery, Trondheim. Sgt Davie in Mollendal Church Cemetery, Bergen, Norway and Sgt Colley is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Hendrie has assummed that rank of Lt equates to USAAF.

    Regards
    Ross

    Hello Linzee,

    Glad to help.

    For Ross,
I may be wrong but I expect the Rank is for SAAF officer and not anything to do with USAAF, I agree it looks like andrew Hendrie's book has it wrong.

    All the best
    Alex
