Default 29060 Group Captain James Arthur S. BROWN

In 1941, GD pilot, 29060 Wing Commander James Arthur S.Brown (b.1911 Alverstoke - d.1994 Portsmouth) took command of No 489 (RNZAF) Squadron till 1943 where on promotion to Group Captain, he then took command of No 9 Operational Training Unit based at RAF Aldergrove, part of 17 Group. Can anyone with access to the 489 Sqn 1941-1942 ORBs help me with a look up? (Blenheims and Hampdens) and where was the HQ of 17 Group in 1943?

    Thank you
    Norman

"17 Group as it was designated during the war moved into their new purpose built headquarters in 1943 having vacated their former HQ in the GPO buildings in Market Street Watford"

    Hello Dave,

Thanks for your speedy reply. I am a little confused as after looking up the URL you kindly supplied, found myself reading about Royal Observer Posts. Are you saying that No 5 Group ROC post in post war Watford was once the home of HQ No 17 Group, Coastal Command? I've no reason to doubt but want confirmation, thank you.

    Hi Norman,

No, and if I gave that impression I apologize. I merely googled "17 Group HQ 1943" and that link came up. Once I saw the sentence quoted in my first reply I was of the belief this was the place.

Hopefully, I have not wasted your time. I trust Ross or Malcolm will have the correct answer for you.

I tried searching for a location for 17 Group, but it appears to be notional - there were elements of 17 Group at bases all over the country, wherever a training unit was based. It had no official boundaries, according to RAF web.

I found a picture of the group commander, Air Commodore H.G. Smart, in a photo with Air Chief Marshall Joubert taken at Northwood, so perhaps he was based at Coastal Command headquarters in Eastbury, Herts.
