Default Any experts on RFC / RAF WWI casualties out there??

    Evening All

I am trying to establish exactly how many personnel were lost whilst serving with 78 Sqn RFC / RAF 1916 - 1919

There appears to be some serious "grey areas" between different web sites - including the info supplied to me by the CWGC themselves . . . . Can anyone fill in the gaps??

78 Sqn RFC were formed on 1.11.16 and disbanded (as a RAF unit) 31.12.19. My list (from the CWGC) is as follows

    As Royal Flying Corps

    5/5/17
2nd Lt VH Adams KIA in France.
Doubtful as 78 Sqn never served in France! One site lists him as 70 Sqn (It is possible that the 8 and the 0 could be easily mixed up?)

    22/5/17
    2nd Lt RF Crapp
    No further details ??

    11/9/17
    2nd Lt R Burton
No further details ??- although a site lists a 2nd Lt Angood RFC as being killed in a flying accident - so as least the date matches!

    As Royal Air Force

    20/4/18

Maj Cuthbert Rowden MC Age 21 (& 78 Sqn Commanding Officer!) killed in the crash of Camel C6717
78 Sqn were at Sutton's Farm, Essex at this point

    15/7/18
Air Mechanic 1st Class John Dunbar Age 29 killed in Essex.
    No further details

    22/5/18
2nd Lt Cyril Gordon Joyce Age 21 killed in a flying accident. Buried in Hornchurch (AKA Suttons Farm)

    15/5/19
2nd Lt Hugh Casillis Smith Age 19. Buried at Hornchurch (AKA Suttons Farm)

If anyone can both confirm/correct the information above - or even add previously unknown losses - or give reasons for the ones listed above. I would be most grateful

Thanks in advance for any co-operation

    Kind Regards

    De Teissier, A

    Dunbar, J
    Joyce, C G

Many thanks for this info - clearly more than was provided by the CWGC

Can you please contact me at tonyhibberd752@yahoo.co.uk - and if possible before the 1st November?

I would be most grateful for more information on these specific losses

    Kind Regards

Have you tried checking if they have army records on Ancestry- sometimes continues with RFC/RAF info especially the pension docs
