Default 1425494 Flt Sgt Robert Duckworth, died 16 October 1943

1425494 Flt Sgt Robert Duckworth was killed in a 195 Sqn Typhoon on 16 October 1943, I believe in a flying accident. Can anyone provide me (i) the circumstances of his loss, please, and (ii), if possible, the date he joined 195 Squadron?

    Thanks
    Steve

Couldn't find Duckworth's name in the Shores' book on Typhoon and Tempest for 16 Oct 43. There was a ground accident recorded but no details of the pilot.

    Thanks Colin

Ah, so maybe it was a ground accident and not a flying accident?

    The danger of presumption!

    Thanks

    Steve,
I've gone back through the ORB, from the 16th Oct to 1st August, and not only is there no record of his death, in the 540/541's, but no sign of him at all listed as flying within that time. And strangley, on GRO, although i get 6 hits for Airforce deaths, he is not one of them.

    Hi Allan

Thanks for that. How strange. The CWGC has him listed as having died on 195 Sqn on 16 October 1943. See http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=2701920

I don't know when he left 41 Squadron (joined 19 January 1943) as he receives no further mention in the ORB, mainly, I presume, as a result of the fact the Squadron was doing very little operational flying at the time.

My total info on the chap is:

    b Accrington, Lancs, 7 Feb 20
enl in RAFVR, Cardington, 11 Feb 41
2 BFTS, Polaris Flt Academy, War Eagle Fld, Lancaster, CA, USA, 1941
    Sgt Plt, 1942
    59 OTU, Millfield, 1942
    41 Sqn, 19 Jan 43

...plus the details of his death.

Is there anything on him joining 195 Sqn back around the beginning of the year, perhaps?

    Thanks
    Steve

So the CWGC has lead us on a wild goose chase then!!! But still no sign of him in the ORB, from the time the squadron formed, through to when they went over to Lancs. There was a fatality on 8/7/43, but that was F/Sgt Vause, crashed during a low flying exercise.

The dates for flight global archives are dates of publication, not dates when the incident occurred which could be two to three months prior again.

I stand corrected in my comment about wild goose chase, Dennis is correct, i'll put it down to an overdose of Grouse last night, affecting the grey matter. Have also managed at last to trace him on GRO, as death registered in the Preston area, for the Oct-Dec period.
