Default Sergeant George Edgar Downton 16.08.44

    Hi

Does anyone have any additional information on the above airman, I believe he may of been an Observer, all I have is the CWGC details and is buried in Keynsham.

    Hello GlennB,

Firstly, Downton's date of death is listed on the CWGC as - 16-8-1943.

Bill Chorley, in his Bomber Command Roll of Honour (BCL9RoH/191), records Downton as member of No.29 OTU. Flight. November 11, 1943. pp.542-3. Cas Comm. No.303, records Downton as - Died On Active Service.

BCL7/142, does mention the following incident:

    16 August 1943
    29 OTU
    Wellington III BK550
    Training

T/o 1030 Bitteswell for a cross-country flight. While away from base, the wind direction changed and having failed to notice this, Sgt Holmes landed 1030 ? downwind and crashed off the end of the runway.

    Sgt N P Holmes

Whether Downton was involved in this incident, I have no idea!

Others might be able to pick-up the traces from here.

    Col.
