Default 97 Sqn Manchester L7323 loss details 10-11 May 1941?

    Dear All,

I am looking for any information on the loss of 97 Sqn Manchester L7323, which was ditched on its return from a bombing op to Berlin on 10-11 May 1941, all six crew members being taken PoW. Especially details on the cause of loss, time of loss & the location where it was ditched would be welcomed!

    Cheers & thanks, Theo

    Hi Theo, hope you're well.

There's a long and detailed narrative on this one in Robert Kirby's "Avro Manchester" book (P.70/72).

I don't have time to give the details tonight but if no-one else does so beforehand I'll try to give you the precis in the next day or two. Basically it was engine problems and the a/c ditched (it says) close to 5230N / 0415E, 22 miles west of Bergen am Zee at 0410 hrs. The crew were picked up after four and a half days at sea by a group of small Dutch trawlers, at about 1830 hrs on 17/5/1941, and were landed back at Ijmuiden.

Hope this helps for the time being.

    Cheers

    Ian

    Default L7323

Just noticed that 11th to 17th isn't four and a half days, so something's wrong there. Have to have a look at that point.

    Hi Ian,

Thanks for these interesting details -I had hoped for a match between the following NF claim and the loss of this 97 Sqn Manchester, but that is clearly out of the question..

Oblt. Walter Milius: 1 1./NJG3 Manchester Sea 15 km. WSW Vestrup 01.15

    Cheers, Theo
