Default Munich Raid 9/10 March 1943

    Good Evening,

I wonder if anybody has details of the route taken by aircraft of 61 Squadron who participated in this raid? I have Lancaster ED703 brought down in the area of Furstenfeldbruck West of Munich, and am trying to determine whether it was on the bombing run or homebound at that time. Any advice would be welcome.

    Many thanks

    Hi Squawk,

The following image of the Raid Track Maps covers all the Group routes that night.

    http://www.rafcommands.com/Images/AIR14_3373/DSCF8472.JPG

It is extracted from the file in AIR14/3373 which covers all the radio intercept and crew debrief reports for the raid.

All Bomber Command Operations have a similar file but only main force raids have the Raid Track Map.

    Regards
    Ross

From what Ross has provided, and a look at the position of the crash area on Google maps, it would look as though it was on the homeward journey.

The pencil additions to the last typed page are a common feature in the files but I cannot say if they were done during the war years or by a post war researcher.

Thank you very much for this excellent response which provides answers way beyond my initial question. It also gives a clear pathway to other documents in National Archives - I have an uneasy relationship with that online catalogue.

Alan - I agree that it looks like Francis Walters made it to the target.

Thats another "Old Boy" from the school whose service and loss can be better understood.

    Many thanks,
