    Default Losses 2 Jan 1943 19430102

    Hi All

Having plodded through the A-B series trying to tie aircraft losses to my casualty lists, I now have a few queries I'm hoping someone can help with

Flt Sgt COUTTS, GEORGE ALEC (1375929) RAFVR; age: 29
Sgt GREENSHIELDS, EDWARD FALCONER (1271061) RAFVR; age: 21
Flt Sgt MALLINSON, JAMES ROBIN DFM (1289028) RAFVR; age: 22

The above were with 242 Sqn and I've identified two losses that day, Spitfire VBs, ER592, ER913 but not the third, does anyone know the tird and which pilot was flying in which?

Fg Off FINN, ROBERT CYRIL DFM (80212) RAFVR; age: 27 was killed flying a Hurricane of No 615 Sqn, possibly HV849?

    also Anson I, DJ382 of No 10 (O) AFU : -
Sgt HENDERSON, JOSEPH JOHN (1117181) RAFVR; age: 21 ,
Sgt MAXWELL, WILLIAM HAROLD MCQUEEN (R/141701) RCAF; age: 22
Sgt McNEILL, JOHN CLAIR (R/140400) RCAF; age: 23
Sgt WOODS, ERNEST HARRY (961555) RAFVR; age: 29

    Oxford II, AB761 of No 12 (P) AFU: -
Sgt ALLEN, JOHN MONTAGUE (1338665) RAFVR; age: 19

    All the best

    Malcolm

The No.10 (O)AFU ORB records Sgt Z. Jejiorowski (PAF) as the pilot of DJ382, no further crew details, other than stating the aircraft was presumed lost over the Irish Sea. The sortie was Dumfries - Mull of Galloway - Silloth - Dumfries. Floating wreckage was later sighted off the Mull of Galloway.

    Hi Al

I aready had Jejiorowsk but TSGNO quotes McQueen and McNeill being lost on an Anson of 10 (P) AFU over the North Sea along with three other non Canadians so I suspect these are the five crew

    Cheers

    Malcolm,
Don't know who was flying which Spitfire 242 Sqn; third aircraft lost was serial ER118.
    Regards,
    Henk.

    Malcolm,
In "They Shall Grow Not Old" (Allison) is mentioned on page 550 that W/OČ Lewis B. MURRAY - RCAF R/94397 of 242 Sqn was missing flying Spitfire ER118. This means that 242 Sqn lost four airmen. We could find serials ER592 and ER913. Air Britain mentions ER140 being shot down by FW190 off Cap Rosa however on 4-1-1943. I don't have a 242 Sqn airman unaccounted for on 4-1-1943 and could ER140 be the number four we're looking for.
    What's your idea ?
    Regards,
    Henk.

    Hi Henk

I already had Murrey in ER118 but forgot him when I posted the request so as you say we are still looking for another aircraft.

It wouldn't be the first time A-B and CWGC have a difference in dates but there doesn't appear to be a 242 loss on the 4th and all the others were shot down off Cap Rosa so my money would be on ER140
