P/O Phillips was killed in DF344 close to Shawbury, but the aircraft (and pilot) were with No.11 (P)AFU. No.9 (P)AFU were operating Master and Harvard aircraft at the time from Errol in Scotland. There were two entries in the No.11 (P)AFU ORB for DF344.

February 28th 1943, “Night Flying Fatal Accident. Oxford I DF344. This aircraft crashed 3 miles south of the aerodrome when an A.F.U. pilot, P/O D.A. Phillips, was on the down-wind leg after having carried out an over-shoot at about 400 feet. The aircraft was totally wrecked and the pilot killed instantly. An investigation was called for.”

February 28th 1943, “Shawbury. 20.45hrs Fatal flying accident. Oxford Aircraft. During night flying. Injuries:- Multiple, immediate death of Pilot 133115 P/O Phillips D.A.”

Sgt Court was one of the crew killed in Wellington HX737, also the personnel you have listed against Anson EG300, with the addition of Sgt Wall, were from HX737; the following is from the ORB February 28th 1943, “Wellington a/c H.X. 737 (Capt Sgt Court) crashed in Eire and caught fire. The crew of 6, Sgts Wall, Court, Campbell, Gutteridge, Farthing and Gilmore were killed.”

    Hi Malcolm,

    26 Feb 1943

Spitfire PR II, N3111 of No 543 Sqn
Flt Lt DONALDSON, ROBERT WISEMAN (31217) RAF; age: 28

    28 Feb 1943

Spitfire IV, AB128 of No 543 Sqn
Flt Sgt EVANS, CHARLES HOPE (1379807) RAFVR; age: 20

I can confirm the details for the above, except that Spitfire N3111 was a PR Type G (PR.VII) and EVANS rank at time of death was Sgt.

    Best Regards

    Many thanks Andy and John

Evans rank of Flt Sgt is that given on CWGC so probably a posthumous promotion

    Malcolm,
Forgot to add that I also had 6 casualties on HX737 rather than on EG300.
