Default Aircraft ID and place of manufature

    Hi,
I am trying to find the places of manufacture of several aircraft that my uncle flew in. Does the aircraft serial number link to the manufacturer? If so, how do I go about finding out? I think one of the aircraft. EH 943 was manufatured by the Austin Aero Company.

    Thanks
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
From AB Serials, EH943 was indeed made at Austin Motors, Longbridge and was one of a batch of 120 Stirlings delivered between May and November 1943.

Yes the serial number EH943 does relate to an aircraft type, I am not a home at present to check serial number lists, but a look on the web shows that it was a Short Stirling lost on a mission to Laon, France on 22/23 April 1944.

The Air Britain series of RAF serial number books will give type, where / when manufactured and contract numbers.

Give us the list of serial numbers and we can check them out.

According to Bryce Gomersall’s “The Stirling File” the remainder of the aircraft you have identified were made by the following producers : -

LJ 504 – Short Bros. (Rochester & Bedford) Ltd.
LK 384 – Austin Motors Ltd.
LK 388 - Austin Motors Ltd.
LK 499 - Austin Motors Ltd.
    MZ260 – Short & Harland Ltd.
