    Default Spitfire Collison 57 OTU 2-11-41

    Fror Spitfire N3066 in Air Britain Aeromilitaria it states that it collided with P9550. However
    I believe this to be actually P9559

    Which crashed at Kimmel Park Bodelwydd on this date.

    For P9550 I have Failed To Return from Met flight 7.11.41 with 1401 Flt (this is also what is in Ross McNeills vol.I page 162 of CC Losses)

    On this date the following two pilots are buried at Hawarden on this date:
    P/O H.W. PRONK - 107918 (from Holland)
    Sgt Pierre L.M. MOREAUX - 1380465 (from France)

    Who can confirm

    a) Aircraft in collison were N3066 and P9559
    b) The pilots of the two aircraft that crashed
    c) Where N3066 crashed

    BTW Air Britain Crashes has

    2.11.41 Spitfire I N3066 57 OTU Kinmel Park, Bodelwyddan, Flint Collison
    2.11.41 Spitfire I P9559 57 OTU Kinmel Park, Bodelwyddan, Flint Collison

    Thanks

    Hi Paul
    Not sure whether you were quoting the Air Britain P Serials or not but that list gives the collision as between P9559 and N3066 on 2/11/41 with P9559 crashing at Kimmel Park Bodelwyddan, Flint. I don't have the N Serials to cross check. P9550 is given as Missing on Met Flight on 7/11/41 with 1401 Flt.

    I just want to confirm that N3066 and P9559 collided and who was on what (if possible) or the pilots at least

    Hello,

    Would like to resuscitate this old thread and ask, has there been any progress made in matching airmen to aircraft?

    Thanks.

    Default Spitfire collison 57 OTU 2/11/41

    Sadly i cannot confirm these details , but i wanted to add,my thoughts on this thread , PAUL i AGREE with you that it was in fact SPITFIRE P9559 that was involved with SPITFIRE N3066,, THE ORB FOR 57 OTU has the following to say
    " 2/11/41 P/O PRONK and Sgt MORAU killed in flying accident at KIMMEL PARK BODELWYDDAN whilst undergoing operational training ".

    My notes show the following P9559 LV-R ,WAS BEING FLOWN BY SGT PIERRE LOUIS MARIE MOREAUX
    And N3066-LV-D, WAS BEING FLOWN BY PILOT OFFICER HENDRIK WILLIAM PRONK of the NETHERLANDS , of course this is unconfirmed and i am sorry i cannot help further , hopefully the 1180 may provide the answer?

    it looks like the AB serials have made a mistake as the latest AB RAF AIRCRAFT P1000-R9999 SHOWS the two aircraft being involved as N3066 AND P9559.

    For better, or for worse, there is a contemporary account of this accident by none other than the redoubtable, "Buzz" Beurling:-

    Under such conditions we had our share of crack-ups. fatal and otherwise, tragic and comic. Of my own flight totalling fifteen pupils, two were killed at O.T.U. - Pronk*, an Australian[sic], and Moreau[sic], a lad from South America[sic]. They were practising head-on attacks over the coast, pulled out too late and collided. Moreau's ship simply blew to pieces, and he hadn't a chance to bale out. Pronk hit a hillside before he could get his aircraft under control and himself out of the cockpit.

    See:
    Malta Spitfire:The Story of a Fighter Pilot.
    F/O Beurling,George F. & Leslie Roberts.
    London:Hutchinson,c.1943.
    p.40.

    *Hendrik (Henk) Wilhelmus Pronk, whose father, A. J. Pronk, was the General Manager, and later the Director of the KPM Shipping Line, was raised in Sydney, Australia. He attended the prestigious Sydney Public School, Shore Sydney Church of England Grammar School (1930-1935). Pronk (born 14-11-1917), was with Dalgety & Co., at Wagga Wagga, NSW at the outbreak of the war. He volunteered for the RAAF, but was rejected, as officially, he was still a Dutch subject, although holding a private pilots' licence. He sailed for England as a gunner on a Dutch armed merchant vessel, and was accepted as a trainee fighter pilot in the RAF.

    Hope we can resolve this dilemma.

    As the person who started this thread orginally, I think I know where the confusion started.

    Air Britain Aeromiltaria Spring 2007 Spitfire I Production Batch 3 Part 2

    P9550. Missing from met flight 7.1.41

    P9559. Deld 9 MU 20.6.40; 54 Sqn 1.9.40; 57 OTU (LV-R) 3.2.41; undercarriage collapsed in
    heavy landing (Sgt F. R. McCann OK) , Cat Ac 17,4,41; ROS; Collided with N3066 and crashed,
    Kimmel Park, Bodelwyddan Flint, 2.11.41 (Sgt P L M Morau (sic) killed)

    Air Britain Aeromiltaria Summner 2006 Spitfire I Production Batch 2

    N3066. Deld 9 MU 11.10.39; 611 Sqn 16.3.40; 616 Sqn Cat 2, 18.10.40 (Sgt R Ivey OK);
    65 Sqn 26.2.41; 308 Sqn 13.4.41; 403 Sqn (KH-N) 27.5.41;
    57 OTU (LV-D) 26.7.41; undercrarriage collapsed in heavy landing Hawarden (P/O F R Clarke) Cat C; 20.8.41;
    ROS 23.8.41; 57 OTU 6.9.41; Collided with P9550 (sic) and crashed, Kimmel Park,
    Bodelwyddan , Abergele Denbigh (P/O H W Pronk - Dutch killed) 2.11.41

    The issue is that there is a at Typo record for N3066 which said "P9550" is should be of course P9559

    Paul,

    MORAU - P9559
    PRONK - N3066

    Fine by me.

    Thanks,

    Col.
