Default My Dad's RAF Service Records - help!

I've got my Dad's RAF Service Records back a few days ago and it's a jumble of letters and numbers. However, having done a search I think I've got some of it sorted, but do need help with the rest of it. My Dad was an Armourer in Bomb Disposal and spent approx 5 years in Germany doing the dangerous work. What was interesting was that he always told us he was the only one in the RAF in his Group/s.. the rest were Army...if that helps.

    Hi

Here is what I can give you quickly, however, dates would be useful.

4W 3RC = No 4 Wing, 3 Recruit Centre at Padgate not Edinburgh
12 S of T. T = No 12 School of Technical Training at Melksham which trained armourers
8 A.G.S = No 8 Air Gunners School at Evanton
HQ 25 Group was at Market Drayton and controlled all the Armament training schools
    (a) = attached, ie he was still on the strength of another unit whilst undertaking a course or carrying out a temporary duty.
10 S of T.T = No 10 School of Technical Training at Kirkham
    8. R.C (A) = No 8 Recruit Centre at Arbroth. (A) isanother version od 'attached'
HQ 5 Group was located in Crantham but he may have been allocated to the Group and travelled around its stations in Lincolnshire.
H.E = Home Establishment ie he was being returned to the UK from overseas
    5. P.D.C = No 5 Personnel Despatch Centre which in 1949 was at Hednesford

For a detailed history of the the RAF's Bomb Disposal organisation I suggest you visit - www.rafbdhistory.co.uk

HQ B.D.Wing - (Bomb Disposal Wing)
6207 BD FLT Air? (Bomb Disposal Flight) = Any info on this? There is also a X under 'Reason' next to it.
6203 BD FLT (Bomb Disposal Flight) = Any info on this? There is also a X under 'Reason' next to it
6210 BD FLT (BAFO) - Germany = Any info on this? There is also a X under 'Reason' next to it
6210 BD FLT (BAFO) = Any info on this
Renamed 5131 (BD) Sqdn = any info on this?
Bomb Disposal Wing - North Coates = any info what this is/was?

    As for this one: -
    *H24BAFOAD (A) (British Air Forces Occupation) + (Air Depot ? ) = what does the H24 and (A) mean?

BAFO = British Air Forces Occupation
AD possibly stands for Air Disarmament (which would fit with his training)
    (A) = Attached

Are you sure the beginning is actually H24?

    All the best

    Malcolm

Wow, thank you so much, Malcom you certainly have a lot of useful knowledge to give me.

Here are the dates under 'Dates of Movement'

7/5/41 ~ Edinburgh / 3RC = this is what is typed at the top of the page

    (no date) ~ 4W 3RC = No 4 Wing, 3 Recruit Centre (Padgate)

    (no date) ~ 12 S of T. T = No 12 School of Technical Training (Melksham)

(no date) ~ HQ 25 Group (Market Drayton)

    (no date) ~ 8 A.G.S = No 8 Air Gunners School (Evanton)

3/1/42 ~ No 12 School of Technical Training (a) (Melksham)

    12/1/42 ~ 8 A.G.S = No 8 Air Gunners School (Evanton)

    11/3/42 ~ 10 S of T.T = No 10 School of Technical Training (Kirkham)

(no date) ~ 8 A.G.S = No 8 Air Gunners School at (Evanton)

    28/5/42 ~ 25 Group

    24/9/42 ~ 25 Group

(no date) ~ HQ Bomb Disposal Wing

HQ 5 Group (Crantham) *Do you mean Grantham and HQ 25? I haven't heard of a Crantham and there isn't an HQ 5 on the list.

H24BAFOAD is definitely H24. Could it refer to 24hr notice or something like that?

This is a list of some of the places in the UK my Dad told me he was stationed at which don't appear on his records per se... .. which may help you further.

    Hi

7/5/41 ~ Edinburgh / 3RC - I think this is probably referring to the Combined Recuiting Centre in Edinburgh, where he was enlisted followed by No 3 RC at Padgate

(no date) ~ HQ Bomb Disposal Wing - This was probably in Doncaster

HQ 5 Group (Crantham) I did mean Grantham and I must have accidentally removed the 2 from 25

H24BAFOAD is definitely H24. Could it refer to 24hr notice or something like that?

Could you scan the part which shows the above and e-mail it to me at malcolm@rafweb.org

    Warrington (Padgate)
Snaith Headquarters - probably on BD duties
Rufforth Headquarters - probably on BD duties
Elvington, York - probably on BD duties
Pocklington, York - probably on BD duties
Maltby, Doncaster, (operating from a Mansion) - BD Wing HQ?
Doncaster (opp side to Race course) - Mine Disposal Course
Essex Headquarters? - probably on BD duties
North Weald, Essex -probably on BD duties
East Anglia - probably on BD duties
Gloucester (landed back here from Germany) - not landed (there is no airfield) but posted here after landing and was probably RAF Innsworth in Gloucester

I'm so grateful to you, Malcom, for providing me with all this information. My Dad's records just looked like a jumble of letters and numbers to me at first, but with your help it's all becoming much clearer. He never used to talk much about his RAF days, so what information I do have.. and what you have provided... means a lot to me. I'm in the middle of putting together a little website on my Dad and when I've finished updating it I'll post the url.

    P.S..I've sent you the email.
