Default RAF officer posting to Italy in 1944

    Hi all,

I have following information from Czech depot diary:

    6.9.43 left for 5 PDC
    23.2.45 arrived from 56 PDC

From other source in mid 1944 I have a note "in Italy"

Well from these bits and pieces am trying to put together that this officer was posted to Italy in the above mentioned period.
    My questions:

    1) No. 5 PDC - was this unit only for specific destinations or it is not possible to determine the destination, at least a continent?
    2) No. 56 PDC - I was not able to find such a unit, so there are two possibilities:
    a) No. 5 PDC again
    b) No. 56 PTC, Portici, Naples - this will confirms my theory.

    Any ideas and suggestions?

    TIA

    Pavel,
5 PDC was in UK (so should be noted as "Port of Embarkation"), 56 PDC was "somewhere" in Middle East. Other board members should be able to provide exact locations for these two units.

    Ahoj Pavel,

No. 5 PDC - Personnel Despatch Centre stationed in Padgate (1941 Sept.-1945 Dec.) and I donīt think that this unit was designated for specific destinations.

No. 56 PDC - could be typing error, No. 56 Personnel Transit Centre in Portici, Naples could be the right unit where your Czechoslovak officer was posted in Italy for transfer to UK.

What was the reason of his posting to Italy? This posting to Italy or anywhere abroad is bit unusual for Czechoslovaks during ww2.

    hope this helps

    Hi Chaps,

David - thanks I was able to check the book with non-flying units but the problem is that 56 PDC look like typo as this unit is not mentioned, only 56 PTC as mentioned by munro.

munro - yes it is a big mystery for me at the moment why Navigator of 311 Sq after tour of operation was posted abroad. No info in Czech Depot diary about his posting, only in the list o 311 Sq members is note "in Italy" and that is all:-(
