    Default 487 Squadron, Ventura AJ171, 20 January 1943

During a low-level training exercises Ventura AJ171 (Coded EG-D) approached the Kings Forest Lodge, near West Stow, Suffolk. The aircraft caught the top of some trees on slightly rising ground and crashed near the gateway of the Lodge. The crew were all said to be killed.

The Pilot was Sgt. G.J. ABREY (GB1385479) and the Wop/AG was F/O F.D. Drake (J/12307).

I already checked Geoff's search engine but no other airmen appear for that date. Therefore does anyone know if there was any other crew aboard and, if so, there fate?

    Regards,
    Christian

    Hi Alan,

    Thanks!

This must be ALDRIDGE, Sgt. H. (R/115486) who was part of the same course as ABREY and DRAKE at No.34 OTU, Pennfield Ridge.

    Hi Christian,

R/115486 Sgt (Nav.) Howard ALDRIDGE RCAF, confirmed as third crew member. He was thrown clear, and escaped with severe injuries.

    Thanks Ken.

I had seen this listing before but without Col.'s confirmation I could not conclusively say Aldridge was in fact aboard this particular a/c.

There are no official class listings for those who went through No.34 OTU, Pennfield Ridge and no listings of those who "crewed" up there. So it is a slow process piecing all of this together.

    Henk,

Might I ask your source for the statement that, J/11119 F/O (Obs.) Kenneth William JOHNS RCAF, was aboard Ventura AJ171 on 20-1-1943?

    Col,
No known source and therefore deleted his name from AJ171. He was killed 22-1-1943 on AE899.
    Regards,
    Henk.
