Default Spitfire AR218 and Magister R1977

    Hello,

No.131 Sqn Spitfire AR218 and Magister R1977 collided on 28.09.41. The two pilots of the Magister were killed, P/O Chubb and Sgt Lee. However I am not sure of the Spifire pilot who survived, I think it was the Belgian F/L Gonay but need confirmation. If there is furthermore any details available on this accident, I take it.

    Thanks in anticipation

    Phil

Phill, I thought that collision occurred at Atcham rather than Ternhill.

    Hi Phil, Phill and Dave,

the accident was at Atcham and, according to the eye witness report on this website, the pilot was Picard. Can I ask, why did you think it was Gonay, Phil?

Both Chubb and Lee's death are registered at Shrewsbury which would make sence for Atcham

    Chubb Peter 20 Shrewsbury 6a 1379
    Lee Stanley D 21 Shrewsbury 6a 1379

Ternhill would probably be registered at Market Rasen

Ternhill is stated as the location in the Air Britain Crash List

Yep, Paul's correct, deaths at Atcham are recorded under Shrewsbury district. Tern Hill is registered under Whitchurch though, not Market Drayton. Air Britain have made a mistake with their location.

    Cheers,

    Hi Tom,
It was a suggestion only. Indeed, if I follow the ORB, Gonay flew AR218 that day and around the hour the accident occurred but the name of pilot involved is not specified in the ORB.

Default Spitfire AR218 and Magister R1977

    Hello Phil,

Indeed the ORB mentions F/Lt Gonay flying Spitfire AR218 at that date and time. So the ground staff could have mixed Gonay with Picard as I don't find any trace of Spitfire AR218 in the ORB after 28/09/1941. But keep in mind that ORB's are not 100% accurate. The logbooks of Picard and Gonay and eventualy the ORB of Atcham could give us an answer. Unfortunately I don't have them.

    Best regards,

    Serge
